VIRGINIA WOMAN DIGS 80 FOOT LONG TUNNEL 30 FEET UNDER HER HOUSE
I’ve been known to engage in random projects as a temporary cure for boredom. Well, at least I was, before my kids made boredom a faded nostalgia. But even I am a little mystified by how a Virginia woman decided to dig a tunnel under her house. And we’re not talking about a small to-do. We’re talking about 30 feet under her house, and an astounding 80 feet long. That is a hell of a lot of work, displaced dirt and stone, engineering and, of course, local civic red tape. And why that last? Because not only was it not a secret, the woman posted about the entire process on social media.

And she totally has an online handle: “Engineer Kala” on Instagram and TikTok. As you can see from the picture, Engineer Kala wasn’t fooling around. If you didn’t know better, you might think it was a branch of a mine, as it has drainage, sump pits and even an elevator to get into and out of easily. While the whole thing seems kind of nuts, I have to say if I had one, I’d hang out down there with a book and a six-pack to get away from it all. But Engineer Kala had just a few hurdles to jump over and stumble thru to get this done.

LOCAL VIRGINIA AUTHORITIES TRIED TO STOP HER, BUT SHE GOT APPROVAL FOR HER “STORAGE TUNNEL”
First off, Virginia authorities were none too pleased when they got wind of her domestic tunnel project. They were pretty quick to inspect what she was doing and told her to immediately stop. So Engineer Kala stopped, if briefly. Briefly, in this domestic tunnel case, means she hired geotechnical and structural engineers and cut her way thru months of red tape. But she finally got the city to sign off on her project, and had to classify it was a “storage tunnel” to satisfy the bureaucracy.
