Vandals Deface Gandhi Photo, Steal Ashes on 150th Birthday

HINDU VANDALS DESECRATE GANDHI MEMORIAL ON 150TH BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY

So much for what goes around, comes around.  Because I’d love to be there to see when this comes around.  But maybe that’s just me?  Because this is outrageous. Some misguided vandals did in India in early October.  It was just what would have been Gandhi’s 150th birthday.  And it was at his memorial in central India.  Vandals decided to not honor the amazing historic figure by defacing his picture and stealing his ashes.  Yes, these bastards stole Gandhi’s remains!  And if they were willing to do that, what other sacrilege might they consider with the ashes?  It’s pretty upsetting news indeed.  People still hate Gandhi?

SOME HINDUS STILL FEEL THE HATE, PAINT “TRAITOR” ON PICTURES, STEAL GANDHI’S ASHES

The ashes had been at this memorial site since 1948.  That’s when a Hindu extremist assassinated the famous independence leader.  The vandals wrote the word “traitor” using green paint across photographs of Gandhi.  So clearly, there are many who still hate the enduring memory of Gandhi and all he stood for.  But what was that, exactly?  Well, only his having advocated for Hindu-Muslim unity in India.  Gandhi was a devout Hindu.  Clearly, there are Hindus alive today who hate their Muslim countrymen so much they want to tarnish Gandhi’s name, literally and figuratively.  That’s deep anger, in action.

AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING, BUT ARE THEY REALLY TRYING THAT HARD?

So as you can imagine, local authorities in Rewa, which is in Madhya Pradesh, are investigating the theft and defacement.  They consider the event to be a potential breach of the peace. It may also be “prejudicial to national integration.”  The memorial’s name is Bapu Bhawan.  But what is odd is that a local politician asked police to check the CCTV footage of the site.  This is strange.  So if I had to guess, either local officials already know who is responsible.  Or they want the story to die down before the investigation gets too far.  After all, most people in India still consider Gandhi to be the “father of the nation.”  He was a man of peace.  And inclusion.  But the hate is still there.  Will police get justice done?  Will Gandhi’s ashes go home?  We have to wait and see.

Gandhi would say, be patient.  But I’m not.
