United Nations: Ozone Hole Could Be Healed in Just Decades

UNITED NATIONS REPORT TO WORLD IS GOOD NEWS

Ok, this has been some week in the US.  The election was nuts.  Then Trump fired Sessions yesterday (ok, I know that Sessions “resigned,” but please).  And media coverage is now figuring out how to manage a narrative that will be increasingly volatile for the foreseeable future.  So how about some good news to change it up?  The United Nations just issues a new report that shocked me when I heard about it.  According to the study, the ozone hole could be completely healed by the 2060s.  That’s just a few decades away!  Depending on how old you are, this is pretty much gobsmacking amazing.

But even if you grew up only knowing the sky as this massive threat, this is great news.  It means you will likely live to walk outside under the natural sky people enjoyed as recently as the 1950s.  And it means your kids will know nothing else, just like all of humanity before.  But if you’re like me you thought the world was kind of over when you learned about the ozone hole, it’s size and how impossible it was to do anything about it.  Sun exposure was giving everyone skin cancer like never before.  It was depressing.  But now to hear that it can and likely will heal in about 40 some odd years?  Unimaginable.  And great news to get this week.

So how did we get here?  How is this possible?  Evidently, the decades old treaty that banned ozone-depleting chemicals worked.  So much so, that “much more severe ozone depletion in the polar regions has been avoided.”  That’s pretty much amazing news.  And I’ll happily take it this week.  Paul Newman is a scientist who assists in running NASA’s Ozone Watch.  He also chaired this good news UN report.  He said, “We’re at the turnaround point.”  But we’re not supposed to let our guard down and just start polluting again.  Other chemicals could be a threat and we’ll need to act on those, too.  But for now, there’s no G’News, like Good G’News.
