Benjamin Wey: When I came to the United States from China more than 20 years ago, I was determined to live and build my American Dream. This drove me through the ups-and-downs that life as an entrepreneur has brought me.

To this day, as an American executive on Wall Street and an investigative journalist, I am grateful for the opportunity of being part of this melting pot called America. While there is no guidebook to guarantee success as an entrepreneur, I hope these tips below can help others along the way:

  1. Confidence: Believe in what you want to accomplish in life. You cannot do something unless you believe in it.
  2. Love: Love what you do, be passionate about it.
  3. Mentorship: Ask for advice, network extensively and look for someone who you respect that can act as a mentor.
  4. Vision: Have a vision and a clear blueprint of how you are going to achieve what you set out to accomplish.
  5. Results: Remember, you represent your product. You have to feel like you represent it from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep. Be synonymous with your brand.
  6. Change: Reinvent yourself, but don’t try to reinvent the wheel.
  7. Team: Don’t let the lack of knowledge or experience stop you. Build a strong team around you to do what you can’t.
  8. Simplicity: Focus on one thing to be excellent at. Build on your experience rather than jumping ship.
  9. Execution: Just do it! Don’t overanalyze — things will happen as you go along.
  10. Learning: Always educate yourself. You are never done learning. Take a course or meet with capable and confident people to boost your confidence.
