Tipping Lessons for Millennials What to Do

MILLENNIALS DON’T SEEM TO KNOW HOW TIPPING WORKS, SCREWING IT UP FOR US ALL

So ok, here’s the thing. Tipping is an incredibly important part of a lot of retail. But most especially restaurants and the service industry in general. But there’s always been a conflict between businesses making more money and how things are supposed to work. Sometimes, businesses break the law with casual ease to make money they aren’t entitled to. So what am I talking about? I’m talking about what amount we base our tip on. But for whatever reason, Millennials don’t all seem to be clued in on how this is supposed to work. So this is what we should all do. It’s actually really simple. But it does require diligence. Here are some simple lessons to keep in mind.

But diligence should be present every time we spend our money, right? So say you’re at a restaurant and you get the bill. First off, you first base your tip amount on the PRE-TAXED amount. You’re giving a tip based on how much you SPEND IN THE RESTAURANT, not on money you’re obligated to give the fed and state (taxes, see?). So you take that pre-tax amount and you decide 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 22% or whatever. This isn’t an advice piece on how to measure service. But the power, and the money, is yours to dole out here. So do it right.

PRE-TAX TOTAL IS THE ONLY TOTAL THAT MATTERS WHEN IT COMES TO TIPPING

But what about this conflict, you ask? Many establishments don’t tell you what the pre-tax amount is on your bill. But the law says they have to. This has been a big issue on virtual platforms like Grub Hub. They know better. But it makes them money unless you challenge it. So here’s another example. I recently went bowling with the family and the bill came back with a single total. But guess what? That total included the charge for the food/drinks AND the bowling charge! Why the hell would I give a tip on a service like bowling or anything else? You tip on service. In many, if not most states, this is illegal.

SO KIDS THESE DAYS, PLEASE STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND SWING AT GOOD PITCHES, K?

But so many people don’t seem to know how to tip and what the basic law is! So take note and do it right. Tip generously and fairly. This is both for you, the server AND THE REST OF US. When you don’t, these businesses try to screw us all. And sure, I am aware that some businesses may do these little cheats because Millennials are notoriously cheap when it comes to tipping. SMDH. But these little life lessons are important!
