The Hidden Joys of a Thrift Shop

I LOVE THRIFT SHOPS AND THEIR HIDDEN JOYS, DO YOU?

I love finding a treasure hidden amongst piles of rubbish. But I also love when that treasure costs be five bucks.   I’ve been going thrift store shopping since I was born (basically). My mom used to take me all the time; after school, before ice skating, just because we were passing by. It appears she was buying most of our things there (we were pretty poor).  But I loved going to the thrift stores and finding their hidden joys. I loved being, once again, on the lookout for the best items the store could offer.

BUT YOU BUY STUFF YOU LOVE BUT NEVER, EVER WEAR

I remember trying on a full-length blush-colored chiffon skirt when I was 15 and thinking that I absolutely had to have it. It was cheap, duh, so I bought it. I owned it for many years but I never once wore it. This has happened more times than I can count. I buy things because they are exceedingly beautiful then I never wear them once because there is actually nowhere for me to go in them.

BUT OH, THE CONFLICT WHEN YOU STOP BUYING STUFF YOUI DON’T NEED

I only recently stopped buying things I absolutely didn’t need. It’s hard to say no to yourself when the cost is so low. I only stopped because it was the space, not the money, that I was running out of. But I passed up a hot pink wool coat because I already had a coat. I left a vintage jumpsuit behind because I couldn’t think of where I would actually wear it. Then I turned down a pair of metallic Manolos because I already had a pair of silver heels at home. I regret each one of these decisions.

MOVE IN WITH BOYFRIEND, OR KEEP MY THRIFT SHOP ADDICTION?

But if my boyfriend moves in with me, it will all have been worth it. There will actually be space for him to put his clothes and his other things. If he doesn’t move in with me, a.k.a. if we break up, I am going on the biggest freaking thrift store shopping spree of my entire life and not stopping myself from buying anything. And I will have absolutely no regrets.
