Lone Star State of Texas Legalizes Brass Knuckles

BRASS KNUCKLES ARE NOW BACK IN LEGAL VOGUE IN LONE STAR STATE

Texas!  Texas is really, really big.  But as large as it is, it’s pretty small compared to Alaska.  But the Lone Star State has a lot more people.  So laws in Texas govern more, and they impact other states more as well.  So this recent news about Texas as it legalizes brass knuckles is a total head scratcher.  Wait, what?  You don’t know what brass knuckles are?  Well, there’s a reason for that.  They’re illegal in most places.  But that’s because they’re incredibly dangerous.  Yes, yes, I know, in the era of Stand Your Ground Laws and our ludicrously lax gun laws, why worry about brass knuckles?  Well, they’re pretty damn dangerous, that’s why.  But maybe legalizing them actually does make some good sense.

TEXAS GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL THAT LEGALIZES BRASS KNUCKLES, AS AUTOMATIC GUNS JUST FINE

So what are the particulars?  Texas governor Greg Abbott signed the bill into law just recently.  The relating language of the new law explains how it is “relating to the criminal consequences of engaging in certain conduct with respect certain instruments designed, made, or adapted for use in striking a person with a fist.”  So brass “knuckles” are no longer a prohibited item any person can “intentionally or knowingly possesses, manufactures, transports, repairs, or sells.”  So fist candy is officially back in legal vogue.  But why they push to change this law?

TEXAS POLICE HAVE RECENTLY ARRESTED WOMEN FOR BRASS KNUCKLES, BUT SWITCHBLADES ARE JUST FINE

Well, it actually makes some sense.  It was a Democratic representative from El Paso, Joe Moody, who sponsored the bill.  He explained the logic to local media, saying, “A young woman who has a keychain for self-defense, certainly fits the statute of knuckles. And she was arrested for that.”  So see?  That does seem to make some decent sense.  Those supporting the change allege that brass “knuckles are primarily a defensive tool.”  Well, that certainly makes sense, especially compared to machine guns and things like grenades.

But here’s the kicker, Texas, as much as I’m in agreement about legalizing brass knuckles.  You legalized switchblades back in 2013?  And police have been arresting women, until this week, for having brass knuckles?  Hmmm.
