Take a Year Off Work to Travel the World, Hipster Style

WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR A YEAR-LONG TRIP OFF WORK AROUND THE WORLD?

Many people have tried and many people have failed in bringing only what you absolutely need when traveling solo for a year.  It’s so easy to over-pack, even for a weekend trip. Every tiny item feels necessary, when, in reality, you will probably use only half of what you brought. Well, when traveling for a year, there is no room for error. So take a year off work for the best hipster style travel fun.  Here are the essential things you must have on a year-long trip around the world:

THE RIGHT CREDIT CARD

When traveling alone the most important thing is to have constant access to enough money. Pick the right card long before you take off to make sure you will never be left in the lurch in the middle of the night somewhere all alone.

THE RIGHT BAGS

Look deep inside yourself and ask what kind of traveler you are. I like to be compact and self-sufficient, but I don’t like to carry every single thing on my back. I usually go for a small roller carry-on, a backpack and a purse.

LADIES NEED TO BE PREPARED

Make sure you’ve considered your period needs – get it all set BEFORE you go. There is literally nothing worse than being in the middle of nowhere with no Diva cup, no tampons, no Thinx, and just toilet paper to help you.

IF YOU LOVE IT, LEAVE IT HOME

do not bring anything you couldn’t live without. Everything gets ruined over the course of heavy travel, so don’t bring nice things. Unless you hate yourself and want to ruin everything you love.

ORGANIZED PACKING IS KEY

get packing cubes and other pouches that easily organize all of your things so you keep everything compact and safe.

HAVE A DAY BAG FOR IMPORTANT ITEMS

Have a day bag that can carry everything you need for an entire day without getting stolen or lost. Good packable totes and day backpacks are the way to go.

CHARGE YOUR MOBILE DEVICES EVERY CHANCE YOU GET

You can never charge too much. Take advantage when you can and invest in good mobile chargers.

CREATE YOUR COMFORTABLE TRAVEL UNIFORM

It should be comfortable and easy. Mine is a pair of pants (loose when it’s warm, jeans when it’s cold) and a basic t-shirt. Easy and easily accessorized if you wanna spice things up.

OTHER THINGS TO MAKE YOUR HIPSTER STYLE YEAR OFF WORK A PERFECT TRAVEL YEAR

Sink wash dirty clothes,  like a lot. No need to make other people hate you.

Pick good shoes.  These should be comfortable and serve multiple purposes. They should look good but stand up well to the elements. Good luck finding them, but I’m sure they exist somewhere.

Layers beat bulk.  If traveling through colder climates, layer good down puffer jackets with merino wool sweaters to create heat through each layer. Get a good scarf and hat too, so heat doesn’t escape out of your jackets or your head.

Leave beauty products at home.  I travel with coconut oil, a toothbrush, and a hair bush and that’s basically it. Get a good lip pencil that won’t melt and you’re golden.

So go represent your travel hipster style!
