MARYLAND HIGH SCHOOL ROCKED BY N-WORD STUDENT PASSES
So this is a new one on me. I grew up two different worlds. I knew the country side as a white boy and I knew the inner city as one, too. So there were (and likely still are) just a few things I never had to deal with involving the borders on the racial divide. But I’ve never heard of an N-word pass. A “pass?” What the fuck is that? As a kid, I heard the word used in a variety of ways. When white people said it, I knew what they meant. When black people said it, I eventually knew what it meant. I even learned when it was applied to me it meant I belonged, if only for a moment. But what’s happening with these High School students in Maryland is beyond me. But they’re in hot water and should be.
So what is this about? A number of students at Maryland’s Winston Churchill High School supposedly handed out a number of N-word passes. In other words, the kids who received them had some sort of “permission” to use the n-word. They handed the passes out a week ago during lunch break. The Potomac, Maryland school principal Heckert is not happy. Principal Hecker said they’re “an act of hatred.” And, “I am deeply disappointed and appalled that any student in our school would chose to engage in such a racist, hateful act. This behavior is disgraceful and does not reflect the values expected of Winston Churchill students.”
STUDENTS IN HOT WATER, AS NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL TAKES ACTION
Some students at the school say it’s nothing new and said kids have approached them asking for an N-word pass. But the school is taking action. Students involved will face punishment in line of the school’s code of conduct. They will also host a parent-teacher-student association meeting to focus on the matter. That’s a smart move, considering the school’s reputation. It’s a National Blue Ribbon School. US News & World Report ranked it #1 in Maryland in 2018. Now everyone knows the school for a completely different reason. Maybe they’ll get a pass.
