COULD STEVE COOGAN’S ‘ALAN PARTRIDGE’ BECOME THE NEW ‘MONTY PYTHON’

Alan Partridge” is England’s beloved knucklehead created two decades ago by Steve Coogan (“Philomena”) and Armando Iannucci. He finally seems to have crossed over to American audiences. The film won Official Selection at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) and opens in theaters April 4.

Directed by Irishman Declan Lowney, the film entertains us with the latest adventures in Alan’s life. Here we find him working as a radio DJ. His daily routine is wildly disrupted when the station is taken over by new management and a disgruntled ex-employee goes postal. Alan is enlisted by police to talk the gunman down and restore order. Steve Coogan is riotously funny and I nearly choked a few times laughing and snorting.

I caught up with director Declan Lowney on March 21 to talk about the film and his good friend Steve Coogan.

Alan Partridge is well known in England, right?

Yes, definitely. He was created there. He also has a huge fan base in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The fact that Steve got Oscar nominations has helped Alan’s profile enormously. It’s exciting to think that Alan Partridge could find a whole new audience in the U.S.

How would you describe the show to Americans?

Alan started on radio as a sports commentator, then the character got a BBC chat show. On episode six he shot one of his guests dead accidentally. People in the mainstream audience didn’t know it was a spoof.

Sounds like what happens with articles in The Onion here.

Yes, they thought it was a real chat show and couldn’t understand how a man could be so rude to all of his guests. They didn’t know the guests were all actors. Anyway that “death” exploded him. You catch up with Alan three years later and he’s down on his luck on local radio and his wife has left him. Five years later he does another sitcom. Then he’s living in a caravan with his Ukrainian girlfriend trying desperately to get another TV show and he did a live show on the web. It’s a character that keeps being recreated and has lasted for 20 years.

My dad was in radio and said famous people are obsessed with doing one thing, and everything else in life comes secondary. Would you say that’s true?

Oh, yeah, I think that’s spot on. Steve Coogan’s core is to make people laugh.

There were funny Jewish jokes.

[Laughs] Yeah, Alan said, “Never criticize Muslims. Christians, yes. And Jews, a little bit.” And did you get that bit, “Neil Diamond will always be king of the Jews.” [Laughs]

Yes. Funny stuff.

Alan always says the wrong thing. There’s a scene where Alan runs out and tries to stop a car on the street. He says to a female driver, “There’s a madman.” She won’t let him in. He says, “He’s got a gun.” She won’t let him in. “He’s Irish.” She lets him into the car. [Laughs] That’s not an anti-Irish joke, it’s about how English people see Irish people.

Can you describe some of the other characters?

Lynn has been Alan’s assistant since the beginning of time. They’ve always had this weird relationship where you think she is in love with him. He’s horribly rude to her but she has nothing else in her life and keeps coming back for more. It’s almost like a romance but nothing will ever, ever happen. There’s a security man who is unintelligible and is Alan’s only friend. The fans love those characters. If we’d gone and made a movie without some of those regulars they would’ve hated that.

How about your personal life? Do you have a wife and kids who think you’re really cool?

They certainly think I’m really cool. I have a wife and kids who live in Brighton, England. I’ve got two boys, 19 and 16, and an 8-year-old girl. They love what I do.

Wow, you’re a lucky man. Do they show interest in show business?

My two boys were playing music for a while but they’ve grown out of it. I’m hoping they go back to it, and the middle one is really into filmmaking so maybe he’s following in my footsteps. I’d like that.

“Alan Partridge” opens in theaters on April 4. It is available now On Demand and iTunes. Rated PG. 90 min.
