Political Shock, Stenographer Suffers Bizarre Meltdown on House Floor

After nearly 19 days, the government shutdown has ended. Thousands of furloughed federal employees will be allowed to return to work, and the threat of a national default that would plunge the nation into certain economic chaos has narrowly been avoided. Luckily, we don’t have to talk about that here, because one lowly Congressional stenographer has provided something much more interesting to distract us.

Last night, as a vote to end the government shutdown was taking place on the House floor, Dianne Reidy approached the microphone at the podium where she ranted about the Freemasons and God. She managed to make it a full 45 seconds before she was dragged off by security:

“He will not be mocked! This is not one nation under God. It never was. The greatest deception here is this is not one nation under god! It never was. Had it been, it would not have been! The Constitution would not have been written by Freemasons! You cannot serve two masters! You cannot serve two masters! Praise be to God, Lord Jesus Christ.”

Todd Zwillich, a D.C. correspondent for Public Radio International, posted audio from the incident along with the above transcription.

Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., the presiding officer, repeatedly banged her gavel and called for order to be restored in the chamber.

Ros-Lehtinen told Fox News that Reidy “came up to the podium area beneath where I was standing and asked me if the microphones were on. I said that I didn’t know. I assumed that perhaps I was chatting too much to the helpful parliamentarians around me.”

Ros-Lehtinen was surprised when Reidy then turned to the podium and began her invective. She called the incident “sudden, confusing and heartbreaking.” She noted that Reidy is “normally a gentle soul.”

C-SPAN cameras captured Reidy’s tirade and her subsequent ushering off by a mysterious group of blazer-clad henchmen, the Beltway’s answer to The Apollo Theater’s fabled amateur-night executioner.

Reidy has been a longtime fixture on the Hill, well known and respected among her colleagues. It seems safe to assume she suffered a nervous breakdown on Wednesday night in a very public way.

Capitol Police told CNN that Reidy was taken in for questioning before she was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Update: In this and other media outlets, it was reported that Reidy’s comments were the result of an out-of-character temporary lapse in judgement. In actuality, she is crazy.
