New Book "Poking the Squid" Tells All About Animal Sexual Diversity

NEW ILLUSTRATED BOOK “POKING THE SQUID” DIVES DEEP INTO ANIMAL SEXUAL DIVERSITY

To be perfectly honest, I’m not at all up to date when it comes to my knowledge of sexual diversity when it comes to the animal kingdom. Fortunately, I don’t live in a glass house when it comes to sexual politics, human or otherwise. Live and let live fabulously is the way to go. But in many places, including America, just mentioning that homosexuality exists in the animal kingdom, or that (gosh!) animals might get pleasure from the act of sex, is more than enough to get the scarlet letter of “W”oke. So I’m pretty stoked to see that there’s a new, illustrated book called “Poking the Squid” that takes a deep, pithy dive into describing in no uncertain detail the incredibly varied sexual diversity among Earth’s nonhumans.

So “Poking the Squid” is going to make quite the splash, as it were. If you’re at all curious the way I am now, you might want to consider picking up a copy of Perrin Roosevelt Ireland’s delectably colorful book that takes a deep dive into Mother Nature’s broad sexual diversity practices along with page after page of water color illustrations. I’m interested because it’s now pretty clear to me that most of our sexual scientific history has been established with rather strict hetero-blinders on. For America in particular, the idea that the Bible says sex is natural between a man and a woman only, and is only to procreate, has had a lasting, misleading impact about what we think and believe about animal sexuality.

Yet “Poking the Squid” talks about so much else that is scientific and the actual reality about animal sex. Did you know that many animals have gay sex, polyamorous sex, that there’s gender fluidity and that some animals have sex because it feels good? Well, apparently they do! Just like humans. Or maybe, we have sex just like them! Did you know that it was only in 2022 that we knew that female snakes had a clitoris, but that we explored the anatomy of the male, snake penis over 120 years before? That means it’s only been 4 years since we knew that many females in the snake world got pleasure from sex! That kind of thing will surely be awkward for Bible thumpers!

I’m not sure if your local, American public library will be able to purchase this, never mind show it on its shelves. So you might want to pick up your own copy here!
