Spurs Fans Need to Temper Expectations; Live in the Now?

THIS SEASON, IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR SPURS FANS TO TEMPER EXPECATIONS

It’s hard being a Spurs fan this season.  Because the expectations are crazy high, and the roster makes reality consistently frustrating.  I’ve read more chapter and verse of verbose and informed Spurs fanatics who keep saying how impossible it is to emotionally handle the losing this season while still totally intellectually understanding that it’s all still good.  It’s the Spurs process (sorry, Sixers fans).  And I’m kind of on board with the Spurs fans emotional upending of intellectual expectations.  But we seriously need to temper those expectations, and live in the now.  But damn and golly gee how hard it is.

WHICH TRADE RUMORS ARE REAL SO FAR?  NONE, AS THE SPURS FRONT OFFICE IS SAYING NOTHING

Yet here we are entering the actual meaningful days leading up to the NBA trade deadline.  Last week, there were virtually no articles positing various trades the Spurs could or should make.  Yet the last 48 hours has rehashed most of those from the last six weeks, acting like they’re new ideas.  Most of them are pure clickbait, which means that the Spurs front office isn’t saying anything about their plans.  But that means they definitely have plans.  So what are they?  It’s darn near impossible to temper expectations when clickbait makes you wonder: would this destroy the Spurs arsenal of draft picks, or help speed things along like now?

HOW DO SPURS FANS TEMPER EXPECTATIONS WHEN ANYTHING AT ALL IS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE?

I have no idea, except to note that the Spurs could make a shocking splash before the trade deadline in a way they’ve never done before.  Or they could make surprising yet still conservative moves that we’d have to wait to see bear fruit (or not).  But as a pretty basketball aware and informed Spurs fan, I hope they go one of two different ways.  Trade for the Sacramento Kings De’Aaron Fox, because he’s really good and still young.  Or go random Spurs diamond in the (very) rough and trade for the Washington Wizards Jordan Poole, who would either totally rejuvenate his career of simply be off the Spurs books in a couple years.

But please don’t go for Steph Curry; a couple strong seasons before he retires isn’t worth the assets it would take to get him.  And please, please, don’t overpay to get the Brooklyn Nets Cam Johnson.  But if it’s either of the last two, make it the latter.  See?  I’m conflicted while writing about how Spurs fans have to temper expectations.  Oy.
