ONE SPURS FAN’S TAKE ON THE 2025 NBA DRAFT, TRADES AND EMPTY CLICKBAIT SO FAR
This past week has been rather annoying, to be honest. Most years, there’s a LOT of news -actual news- about the NBA draft, potential trades, actual trades. But this year? This year the week before the 2025 NBA draft is simply annoying. Why? Because everything is on hold, for a variety of reasons. Sure, we had one slightly startling trade between the Hornets and Magic. But I kind of expected it to start a cascade of activity. Instead? Essentially nothing, aside from some very minor pick swaps. And as a Spurs fan in particular, I’m pretty much fed up at all (nothing but) the clickbait out there. And really, the last few weeks has been nothing but clickbait for Spurs fans.

DUH, THE SPURS KEEP THE 2ND PICK FOR OBVIOUS REASONS, BUT THE #14 PICK IS STILL UNCLEAR
Sure, Wembanyama has been at the Shaolin Temple on a retreat. Which is great, actually. And there’s been some wholesome salutes to Greg Popovic, all of them great. But in terms of the draft and trades, there’s just no news. And really, if you think about it there shouldn’t be. Because the Spurs have nothing to do until next week on draft night. Clearly, we know who they should take with the #2 overall pick; Dylan Harper. And I, you and every skeptic out there should expect they will do exactly that. You don’t pass on that kind of talent unless you see some big red flags after meeting them. And the Spurs already met with him and… crickets. That’s a good thing. Suit him up for Summer league, already!

DO THE SPURS GET A REAL DEAL FOR DURANT, OR ACTUALLY CONSIDER THE HUGE OUTSIDE SHOOTING FIN?
But the Spurs also have the #14 pick in the 2025 NBA draft. That’s interesting because we have no idea if they’ll use it in the draft, or it becomes a healthy commodity for Kevin Durant, Lauri Markkanen or at least 3 other players. I kind of prefer the latter, even with the injury issues. But if the Suns price on Durant drops enough, it’s clear that Wembanyama would love to play with him. And honestly, Durant on the Spurs would be pure matchup chaos for the rest of the league. But this Spurs fan says to watch game 7 tonight, and ignore all clickbait until, maybe, Tuesday afternoon. Nothing with the Spurs is happening until then.
But by Tuesday, buckle up. Because there will be a storm of trades happening this year, though most of them might not be apparent until draft night itself. And accept my humble ending caveat, as there’s a slight chance I’m wrong about the #2 pick, and the Spurs dry powder will explode in my face like the perfect seasonal fireworks.
