Nothing feels better when you know that the end of New York Fashion Week is approaching. Yes, we all love this industry, and we are a hardcore fashion-addicts group, but if you spend nine days going uptown to the Lincoln Center and rushing back downtown to Milk Studios to attend shows and also going crosstown as some designers decide to show in different locations, you know exactly what I mean.

And add to that crazy itinerary the weather factor — this winter has been brutal in New York, which visually translate to a very large silhouette formed with unlimited layers of fabrics. We all looked like furry monsters, but who said fashion is supposed to always be easy?

If you read my recent article “Curves Are Here To Stay,” you will understand what I meant by the lack of diversity in the fashion industry. But this season, the very famous catwalks of NYFW presented a fashion show with models with disabilities from all over the world who were featured in one of the FTL Moda presentations, the one by designer Antonio Urzi. It is very clear most designers or companies do not create fashion thinking about the needs of people with disabilities, so although I don’t think Urzi’s designs are carrying that flag, it brought attention to the cause. I am sure that companies like Clothing Solutions for disabled people will also benefit from this exposure.

If it wasn’t enough following the NYFW shows, Twitter posts and Instagram photos uploading insanity, the real trend for the fashion crowd was Snapchat, a slideshow of videos and images that disappear after 24 hours. I couldn’t possibly create another social-media profile, so I tried to stay away from it until someone told me that NYFW Snapchat was streaming a “fab” photo of me — yes, me, Gazelle Paulo — so I had to give in to the online madness.

Although Kanye West was also in everybody’s mouth, the most expected debut at the NYFW was Peter Copping for the Oscar de la Renta brand — and he didn’t disappoint. The 48-year old Oxford, England-born designer, who was approved by Mr. de la Renta as his successor before the fashion icon passed away last October, delivered a very respectful collection with a solid presence of Oscar’s work while also carefully shaping the future to leave his mark at the legendary label. Yes, floral references were very much alive …
