One Shoemaker Made Prince 3,000 Pairs of Shoes

PRINCE THE FORMERLY ARTIST, HAD ONE SHOEMAKER CREATE 3,000 PAIRS OF HIS SHOES

Ok, insert short joke here.  But don’t stick the 7 inch in the computer!  And if that seems naughty, you’re not familiar with the Batman album.  But anyway, if you didn’t already know, Prince had a thing about being only 5’3” tall.  That’s why he was pretty much always wearing some seriously heeled kicks in all his performances.  But Prince was kinda crazy with the stunts he would pull wearing those things.  Can you remember any lady performers back in the day -or even today- who would do high jumps while playing guitar wearing heels?  Well, prince did.  But he needed a steady supply of those pumps to keep it real.  That’s how one shoemaker alone made him 3,000 pairs of shoes!

PRINCE NEVER WANTED TO APPEAR TWICE IN THE SAME DAY WITH THE SAME SHOES ON

No, really.  But I should expand a little.  Prince didn’t even want to make public appearances without some heeled help to the tune of 3 1/3-4” of heels.  But he didn’t even want to have the same pair of heeled boots at two different appearances on the same day.  So that means the little brilliant music maker needed a lot of shoes.  But who would make them for him?  The answer is Andre No. 1.  He was one of the most important cobblers to all the stars.  He had some other huge clients like Frank Sinatra and Lady Gaga.

PRINCE HELPED SHOEMAKER DESIGN HIS KICKS, HAD EXTRA STRONG WOOD HEELS TO SURVIVE HIS PERFORMANCES

So the cobbler made a wooden model of Prince’s dancing feet.  Over time, he made about 30-40 pairs of shoes for Prince every damn week.  After a bit of time, that turned into 3,000 pairs of shoes for one person, Prince.  Every shoe had the exact same shape.  But Prince needed his own unique blend of materials, colors and other contrivances to make each shoe unique.  Prince was a big part of the process and would visit the store himself to add his input and even materials of his own.  Performance shoes had wood structures that could make it through Prince’s athletic performances without going all Zion.

Now I miss me some Prince.  So sad he couldn’t stick around for a few more decades of music.
