MEN ARE RISKIER DRIVERS WHEN GETTING INSTRUCTIONS FROM SEXY WOMEN’S VOICES ON CAR SATNAVS
Learning about all the ways archetypal gender identity traits can manifest can be fraught with odd surprises. And for this one, even I am surprised! People driving badly is something that happens all over the world. There’s road rage, phone distraction by talking on the phone or reading and texting, poor attention or simply really, really bad spatial awareness and judgement. But what about the tiny, or maybe not so tiny, male lizard brain that unconsciously acts the fool when it hears the voice of sexy women? Because a new study has found that is, in fact, the case. Men who hear sexy women’s voices on their cars’ satnavs are riskier drivers.

SUDAN UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS FOUND THAT SEXY WOMEN’S VOICES CAUSE 40% INCREASE IN IGNORING RED LIGHTS
The research came out of Fudan University in China. In one of their experiments, they put 66 men through a driving simulation to discover patterns in how they reacted to different voices from the satnav. But when the virtual satnav voice was one of the sexy women’s, drivers would ignore light changes as they approached intersections and go through the red signal. And the proportion of men who ran the red light listening to sexy women’s voices was significantly higher, at an astounding 40% more likely. That’s a pretty significant number and will be cause for disturbed amusement if more research shows the same trend.

WHICH VOICE ON SATNAVS IS THE BEST FOR SAFE DRIVING? AND WHO WOULD BE LISTENING?
Amazingly, it’s been 30 years since cars have had automated voices giving navigation instructions in cars. Traditionally, though that’s an awkward term here, the voices used for automation have almost always been women’s, especially in satnavs, or car navigation systems. But men who are driving and listening to sexy women’s automated voices being 40% more likely to be riskier drivers is worth paying attention to. So what is the answer? Less sexy women’s voices? A man’s voice? Some generic authoritative voice? The answer probably is myriad, and depends on the driver.
But testing could be fun! And the results a little disturbing.
