Scottish Woman Never Felt Pain Assumed That Was Normal

SHE NEVER FELT PAIN AND ASSUMED THAT WAS NORMAL TILL SHE WAS 65

So there is a Scottish woman who assumed it was normal to never feel pain until she was 65 years old.  Her name is Jo Cameron and she is one of only two people in the world with a genetic mutation that ignores… pain.  Like, completely.  But besides feeling no pain, the genetic mutation has some other interesting effects.  Cameron pretty much never feels anxious or afraid.  So think about this.  There are two people in the world, that we know of, who feel no pain and have virtually no anxieties or fear.  If I was still in my 20s I’d say sign me up.  But I’m…. not in my 20s to say the least.  And if I didn’t feel pain now I’d likely break myself walking down the stairs.  But this Scottish woman has made the distance!

SCOTTISH WOMAN DOESN’T KNOW SKIN IS BURNING TILL SHE CAN SMELL IT AS SHE COOKS

But Cameron only recently learned that’s not how things work for the rest of us.  Somehow all social cues, references and depictions of anxiety, fear and pain responses have just slipped her by.  Clearly, watching Fox News wouldn’t make her support Brexit.  But imagine the only way you know you’re burning is when you smell your skin, burning.  Literally.  Cameron burns herself all the time when she cooks.  She literally doesn’t know she’s burning till she smells it or sees it later.  So how did she finally make the discovery she’s one of the rarest humans on the planet?  She had a serious operation and didn’t need ANY painkillers.  But that completely astounded her doctors, who then wanted to know more.  Because that’s not normal.

Cameron said, “Looking back, I realize I hadn’t needed painkillers, but if you don’t need them you don’t question why you don’t.  You are what you are, until someone points it out you don’t question it. I was just a happy soul who didn’t realize there was anything different about me.”  But what about becoming a mother and childbirth? “It was just strange, but I didn’t have pain. It was quite enjoyable really.”  But she’s already found the obvious downside.  She had no idea her hip was destroyed until she couldn’t walk at all.  She never felt the pain.  But there’s still one more impact of this mutation.  Without anxiety and fear, she’s pretty happy.  But constant happiness also means forgetfulness.  Many of our memories form from trauma avoidance.  Jo doesn’t have that.  Or adrenalin rushes.  Ever.
