SAUDI WOMEN TAKE TINY STEP, WILL NOW GET DIVORCE TEXT
So we all keep hearing about Saudi Arabia. Most of the time, how horrible it is for women there. But it’s all pretty much true. And yes, there is that little thing recently about Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. You know, when he allegedly ordered murder of Kashoggi? Yet the Crown Prince is also enacting reforms of longstanding Saudi monarchic practice. One of those is to ensure that Saudi women receive a divorce text. Sound weird? Well, sure. But it is actually an improvement. Until recently, men in Saudi Arabia secretly divorced their wives!

SECRET DIVORCES USED TO BE ALL THE RAGE, TO STEAL WIVES BANK ACCOUNTS
But what is that about? Well, a Saudi court recently made a new rule. Secret divorces are no longer legal! So that means that until recently, Saudi women didn’t even know their husbands divorced them. Well, not until their former husbands were able to steal their bank accounts or firmly screw them out of alimony. Disgusting, right? Well, at least now Saudi women will receive a text telling them their husbands just divorced them. We’ll just have to wait and how timely the new program actually is.

NOW SAUDI WOMEN CAN RECEIVE A TEXT WHILE THEY DRIVE A CAR!
So Saudi women will receive the text notice, along with a “divorce-certificate-number” that includes the court location where they can obtain the actual documentation. There will also be a website where women can ask about their marital status and have access to any probate materials. So just think about these huge steps in Saudi Arabia. Women can now receive a text message that their husband just divorced them, even while the women are driving a car! But it is a baby step, at least.
SAUDI SYSTEM IS ONE THAT STRANGLES SAUDI WOMEN AT ALL LEVELS
Suad Abu-Dayyeh from the human rights org, Equality Now told media, “At least women will know whether they are divorced or not. It is a tiny step, but it is a step in the right direction. The male guardianship system is a core issue and it must be dismantled. It controls women in each and every step of their lives. This system strangles Saudi women.”
