San Diego Hospital Recorded 1800 Women in Intimate Treatments

HOSPITAL SECRETLY RECORDED 1,800 WOMEN IN THEIR MOST INTIMATE TREATMENTS

Ok, this is pretty shocking.  I’m a father and was present for my child’s birth.  So this freaks me out more than a little. A week ago, 81 women sued San Diego Hospital for recording their intimate procedures and treatment without their consent.  So what kinds of procedures were these?  Just totally exposed things like Caesarean births, complications in births, post-miscarriage treatments as well as others.  So I’m not sure what could be more intimate than that list.  As you can imagine, once these women heard about what happened, they were mighty angry.  I expect to hear that more women join in on this legal action.  So far, 50 more women have done just that.

SHARP GROSSMONT HOSPITAL IN SAN DIEGO IN MAJOR TROUBLE AS PLAINTIFFS JOIN

So which hospital is this, exactly?  The Sharp Grossmont Hospital.  The women’s attorney is Allison H. Goddard.  She said that they have more work to do just finding the rest of the women that the hospital secretly recorded.  It’s ugly business, to be sure.  She said, “Sharp could have, but did not, inform the women directly about the secret recordings, so we will continue to work very hard to make sure that every woman affected is aware of her legal rights.”  Since the total number of women recorded was about 1,800, the number is sure to climb, fast.

MOTION ACTIVATED HIDDEN CAMERAS WERE TO CATCH SUPPOSED EMPLOYEE THIEF

The hospital made these recordings between July, 2012 and June, 2013.  So what the hell were these hidden cameras doing in the three Labor and Delivery rooms?  Well, the hospital says it was to find out if an employee had been stealing anesthesia drugs and equipment.  The cameras were motion activated.  So if you walked in, they recorded.  The hospital said, “Although the cameras were intended to record only individuals in front of the anesthesia carts, others, including patients and medical personnel in the operating rooms, were at times visible to the cameras and recorded without sound.”  This is so epically not cool I don’t know where to begin.

RECORDINGS COULD BE IN THE WILD, AS HOSPITAL TOOK NO PRECAUTIONS

But it gets worse.  The hospital was “grossly” negligent in how they stored these illicit recordings.  So yes, it’s really bad.  They kept them on computers that lots of people had access to.  Not all the computers needed passwords.  But who viewed them? We don’t know. The hospital kept no records.  Goddard continued, “It’s horrifying to think that, especially in today’s day and age of the ubiquity of videos on the internet, if one of those videos were to get in the wrong hands, there’s no controlling it.  It takes your own medical care outside your own control.”
