AFTER LOSING THE 2026 NBA FINALS, WHAT WILL THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS DO NEXT THIS OFFSEASON?
I’ve been a New Yorker since 1981, or about 85% of my life to date. But I’ve been a San Antonio Spurs fan since the summer of 1989, when I got to be a random stowaway sitting on the baseline for the Admiral’s debut in his first Summer League game. Back before they were open to the public! So yes, I’m feeling pretty downtrodden since the Spurs lost in Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals to the New York Knicks. Also yes, I stopped wearing my Spurs regalia into Manhattan to work after Trump attended Game 3 at MSG, the Spurs won the game, and suddenly it wasn’t safe at all to wear it any more in NYC. But as a Spurs fan, and despite the total tease of a title, I’m still pretty upbeat about the future. Even though I have no idea whatsoever if the offseason will be a tweak or a blow up along with all the hard work the roster will put in.

But changes will be made this offseason, though I have some doubts about any kind of blow up that totally reshapes the roster and interrupts the current team culture, both on the bench and on the court. I say that, of course, after grinding my teeth at blown leads in every Finals loss that involved pervasively bad shot selection, bad turnovers, blown defensive assignments and what sure looked like a dearth of tough-love coaching to stem the tide. But Mitch Johnson isn’t going anywhere, nor should he. He just took a maternity ward to the NBA Finals, with a starting point guard babysitter who checked out 4 nights at bedtime. Yes, I feel totally disappointed as a Spurs fan after they didn’t win the NBA Championship this year.

But let’s be honest, shall we? If the Spurs hadn’t made it out of the Western Conference Finals this year, we’d be talking about how they were so successful this year, and how their rapid development should be terrifying the league. Yet here we are with a chummed Spurs media environment talking about how bad they are, their culture is, how bad a person Wembanyama is? Please. So what will the Spurs do this offseason? Do they trade starting point guard De’Aaron Fox? Unlikely. But if they do, it will probably be in the next week, since the 2026 NBA Draft is a week from today. As for Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell, I can’t see them moving for a year or two, when some the young stars on the team need to be re-signed with much larger contracts.
DO THE SPURS MAKE TRADES, STAND PAT, BLOW IT UP FOR A MASSIVE FREE AGENT?
But as always, year after year, we have no idea and that’s how the Spurs like it. They have 3 picks next week, at 20, 35, 42 and 44. Do some or all of those turn into a trade or trades, involving Fox, Vassell or Johnson? Do the Spurs do a trade to move up in the draft because they love a particular prospect? Or do they use all 4 picks (4!) and find another Manu Ginobili in the second round, or another Tony Parker at 20? Or do they do nothing at all and simply keep developing and maturing this team (maybe LOTS of free throw practice, as they shot 70% or worse in 2 Finals games)? Does Wemby Speak the 4th Ideal of a Knight Radiant?
As it is at this time every year, we don’t have a clue. And as always, we’ll find out in the coming days, weeks or months. Or maybe not even until the next trade deadline sometime in February of 2027. As a Spurs fan, I’m feeling just fine about that.
