Russian Dachshund Breaths Liquid Oxygen and Lives

RUSSIAN DACHSHUND SURVIVES 1,000 METER DIVE BREATHING LIQUID

Russia has tossed another Sputnik into the research competition with the world.  In a shout out to James Cameron’s The Abyss, Russian researchers have taken science fiction and made it modern science.  Russian scientists successfully had a dachshund breath liquid oxygen.  The dog is the first larger mammal to survive the ordeal.  But they also sent the dog over 1,000 meters underwater while breathing a liquid.  The dachshund, named Nicholas, is fine and in a “good mood.”

DACHSHUND, NICHOLAS, RETURNED TO SURFACE IN GOOD MOOD

The Russian group, Fund for Experimental Research, has kept a team of test dogs.  One of these is a little dachshund named Nicholas.  Nicholas got to be the little dog that made history recently. He breathed liquid oxygen.  He also went underwater over 1,000 meters and returning safely and happy.  The news was released by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin last week.  Rogozin is in charge of Russia’s defense and space industries.  Has Russia really taken this huge step?  They say they have.

NEW TECH COULD SAVE PREEMIES, SUBMARINERS

In an interview with Rossiya’24 TV Rogozin said, “One of our dogs has endured the depth of 1,004 meters.  It breathed, it returned home, it is safe and sound. This test diver runs around.”  But Rogozin understands that many are critical of the use of dogs for these experiments.  Yet he also wants to remind everyone that these experiments might help save many, many lives in the future.  “That’s important not only for submarine crews but also for the infants who are born preterm and should be placed back into an environment resembling the one in the mother’s womb,” Rogozin said. “Or take the people who have sustained serious burns.”

PEOPLE WILL BREATH LIQUID OXYGEN SOON

Rogozin thinks these experiments could save a lot of people in the future.  Even hundreds of thousands of people.  He thinks the researchers responsible for the success deserve large incentives.  He also will insist that this line of research continues.  Experiments in liquid breathing began with mice, rats and hamsters.  Researchers eventually added dogs as subjects.  But only after researchers achieved a 100% survival rate with the smaller animals.

DACHSHUND HERO ADOPTED BY RUSSIAN MINISTER

Russia, like everyone, used to have a long history using animals as test subjects.  So after 1991 they stopped using them.  But the research into liquid breathing found new life.  Russians were horrified after the tragic loss of the submarine, Kursk.  So the idea of being able to rescue people at great depths was too old a dream to continue to ignore.  But there is a happy ending to this part of the story.  Rogozin has adopted the little dachshund pioneer Nicholas.  So Nicholas will enjoy happy retirement at his new home with a German shepherd friend.
