Florida Discovers Roundup Active Ingredient in Popular Breads

FLORIDA DISCOVERED GLYPHOSATE, THE ACTIVE ROUNDUP INGREDIENT, IN POPULAR BREADS

Normally, Florida stories involve the utterly absurd when it comes to stupid crimes, choices and ludicrous facts that come to light. At first blush, learning that a bunch of widely sold and popular breads sold in the state contain the active ingredient of the herbicide Roundup, seems to apply. But bear with me because somehow it really doesn’t. It just happens to be Florida. But it’s likely a problem in many U.S. states. And yes, if you’re not familiar with how dangerous Roundup is, this is a pretty scary situation. It’s a literal poison to people and is used all over the country.

Well, it’s used widely across the country as an herbicide, that is. But it’s not something that anyone in their right minds (presuming they’re not an assassin poisoner) would put into bread for people to eat. Yet given my political leanings, which don’t include contemporary MAGA authoritarianism, it brings me no pleasure to report that the Roundup ingredient glyphosate being in Florida breads was announced by Ron DeSantis and his wife, as well as the vax science denying Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo.

And this is where we come to this not being your typical crazy Florida story. Because these rightwing wing nuts made this announcement of Roundup breads because it was discovered by independent lab testing that was commissioned by Florida’s Department of Health. That’s right, Florida’s government was actually working in its citizens’ interests, testing food safety because the federal government has all but stopped. I suppose this points to an awkward MAGA rift, where science and testing matters? But if you’re in Florida, you might not want to buy Nature’s Own Butter Bread, Nature’s Own Perfectly Crafted White, Wonder Bread Classic White, and Sara Lee Honey Wheat.

And if your reaction is to shrug about Roundup glyphosate in breads, it’s worth knowing that there’s literally no safe level to ingest or be exposed to. It’s poison. But somehow, the levels in Florida breads are in the FDA safety zone. Maybe think about that, too.
