Relationship Between Cancer and Sugar Grows, Is it Love

SUGAR AKA GLUCOSE THE CULPRIT IN THE RESEARCHERS DISCOVERY

Scientists in Belgium may have made a breakthrough in research regarding the relationship between sugar and some cancers.  Researchers found yeast with high levels of glucose (aka sugar) overstimulated the same proteins that were found mutated inside human tumors. And this is what is making cells grow faster and out of control, which is the cause of cancer. The finding, which can be found here: Nature Communications  is helping us understand how cancer develops.

RESEARCHERS LOOK AT THE WARBURG EFFECT AND NOW UNDERSTAND WHAT MAY CAUSE IT

A researcher based team started studying sugar’s link to cancer almost ten years ago to try and better understand what’s called the Warburg effect, this is when a tumor cell make energy through a rapid breakdown of sugar not seen in ordinary cells. That energy in math is thought to be what fuels tumor growth.

MASSIVE SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGH, NOT A MEDICAL ONE HOWEVER.

One scientist mentioned that their study “is able to explain the correlation between the strength of the Warburg effect and tumor aggressiveness”.  “This link between sugar and cancer has sweeping consequences. Our results provide a foundation for future research in this domain, which can now be performed with a much more precise and relevant focus.”  While it’s a monumental finding for the research team, it’s not a medical breakthrough.

CAN’T PROVE THAT A LOW SUGAR DIET WILL CHANGE ODDS OF GETTING CANCER, BUT POSITIVE STEP

It also doesn’t prove that eating a low sugar diet could change a cancer diagnosis. “The findings are not sufficient to identify the primary cause of the Warburg effect,” They said in a release. “Further research is needed”

An unnamed cancer researcher with the American Cancer Society who was not involved in the study, said this research is great, but it comments only on “about one product made during the breakdown of glucose to produce energy.” In other words, it’s a small step in a long process. “They are providing a potential way (the Warburg effect) could be a cause of cancer, but they are a long way away from saying this could actually happen,” said our source.
