So I’m not quite sure where to begin with this story. Why? Because I’m so disgusted with anger that it’s distracting. So the title says it all. And yet…. It doesn’t say or describe enough. So here’s the thing. There’s a lot going on in Turkey. Their leader, Erdogan, has been solidifying his absolute control of the country for some time. With success. And this new law that may be real in the next two weeks reflects that success. Why? Because it fits right into his patriarchal, absolute world view. It will also help him stay in power. So what is this law? Essentially, if a man rapes a young girl (as in, underage) in Turkey, they want a get out of jail free card. So if a man rapes a girl, all he has to do is marry her and no harm, no foul.

“MARRY YOUR RAPIST” LAWS HAVE BEEN DISAPPEARING, SO WHY IS ERDOGAN BETRAYING UNDERAGE GIRLS?
Really, it’s that simple. These laws existed in other countries. We call them “marry your rapist” laws. They still exist in other places. But because of a huge effort at reform Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Tunisia, Lebanon and Morocco no longer have these laws. That’s because it’s a disgusting law. And Turkey’s disgusting Erdogan wants to take a step backward in time, to a friendlier, patriarchal scene. Currently, the age of consent in Turkey is 18 years old. Despite that reality, nearly half a million girls got married in the last ten years. But even worse, 38% of women in Turkey report that they are the victims of physical and/or sexual abuse from their partners.

So what’s going on with Turkey and this disgusting law? Erdogan, plain and simple. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke at a summit in Istanbul back in 2014. He said that gender equality is “against nature.” Ok. If your nature is that of a beast from the Middle Ages, maybe. But this is round 2 for Erdogan and this child rapist marriage law. He tried to pass it in 2016 and failed after people reacted like I am. Like you are. But this law would only turn young girls into sexually available objects with no recourse. Sure, girl-raping men would only receive a pardon if their rape didn’t include “force or threat.” Isn’t that nice? Believe it?
Sigh. It’s not like America has a leader who likes to grab’em by the pussy. Except it does…
