ENGLISH TWINS GROW WORLD RECORD SETTING PUMPKIN WEIGHING 2,819 POUNDS
I kind of love pumpkins. But to be fair, I’m biased with a lifelong pumpkin pie addiction which I have recently, if recently, temporarily satisfied. Plus, pumpkins are great holiday art projects with near infinite creative options that literally anyone can do. Usually, the larger the orange gourd is, the better. The largest I’ve ever carved probably weighed a whopping 40 pounds and took 3 candles to glow properly. But I never really thought about what it would be like to carve a true giant, until I heard about the monster two English twins managed to grow this year. Their record setting pumpkin grew to an astounding 2,819 pounds (and 4 ounces).

TWINS HAVE BEEN GROWING PUMPKINS FOR 50 YEARS, FINALLY MAKE HISTORY WITH “MUGGLE”
And that’s crazy! We’re talking about nearly one and a half tons! The two English twins are Ian and Stuart Paton (both 64), who are from Hampshire, England. They’ve been growing pumpkins for half a century since their early teens, and they’ve always wanted to grow the largest ever. But they’ve come up a little short several times, until now. 2,819 pounds and 4 ounces! That’s the new and current Guinness World Record. They gave their prized, giant record setting beast the nickname “Muggle,” from the Harry Potter series.

“MUGGLE” THE PUMPKIN ALSO BROKE THE RECORD FOR CIRCUMFERENCE AT 21 FEET, 3.8 INCHES
But “Muggle” the pumpkin didn’t just win the heaviest ever prize, it also broke the record for the largest circumference with an astounding 21 feet, 3.8 inches. You can see pretty clearly from the picture above what the scale is with them in the background. The word large is completely inadequate. But I can’t help thinking about how long it would take to carve this beast, never mind how you’d deal with the likely 2,000 pounds plus innards and pumpkins seeds. Well, and I kind of want to see how elephants react, since every year we’re regaled with videos of elephants smashing pumpkins.
Considering how African bush elephants can weigh as much as 13,000 pounds, even this world record setting pumpkin “Muggle” wouldn’t last very long. But boy, what a video that would be!
