NATURE’S LEFT FIELD: CALIFORNIA NOW HAS PREDATOR, CARNIVOROUS SQUIRRELS
Squirrels are quite the enigma, though they live near most people in the United States. They’re goofy, sometimes annoying and all too often flat lumps in the road due to their tree-based depth perception. But some people hate them, especially people with yards, decks and work items laying around. Squirrels dig things up, chew on wood, and can be a general nuisance. My grandfather created a whole separate, vulgar vocabulary just for squirrels. So I can’t help wondering what he’d think of the fact that California now has this shocking reality: predator, carnivorous squirrels.

CARNIVOROUS SQUIRRELS ARE HUNTING, DISMEMBERING AND EATING VOLES
And that’s no exaggeration; it’s a literal truth that even animal experts find shocking. And so far, they have no idea why some squirrels have shifted their diet gear into hunting voles, and eating them like the newly discovered carnivorous creatures they clearly are. It’s a bit of a switch, you understand, to go from a regular vegetarian squirrel diet to hunting voles, decapitating them, tearing their limbs off and then eating them. And yes, that picture above is in situ, somewhere in the middle of the process.

THE MORE CARNIVOROUS SQUIRRELS THERE ARE, THE MORE THERE ARE LIKELY TO BE
But experts think that this could be a trend, and spread across California all too soon. Squirrels, it seems, learn from each other’s observed behavior. So it’s entirely possible that we could expect to see carnivorous, predator squirrels in more than just California in the next few years. But really, so far this disturbing development is mystifying. Think about it, when is the last time that you heard about animals changing their diet essentially overnight like this? Animal behaviors can be suddenly different, like Orcas playfully sinking yachts. But squirrels going nuts to meat out of the blue is quite shocking.
Predator, carnivorous squirrels are in California, and likely spreading. What’s next?
