CHILD PROTECTION SERVICES TAKE NEWBORN FROM WOMAN AFTER DRUG TEST
So there’s clearly something wrong, here. I’ve heard about this happening before. But I assumed places like hospitals, especially hospitals- would know better. But I was totally wrong. A New York woman was doing everything right last week when she was at the hospital in Nagara Falls. She was going to have a baby! But everything pretty much went sideways when her urine test came back positive for drug use. It said she was an opiate user! So obviously, that’s not the kind of thing that medical staff can ignore. The woman was having a baby. So if she was using drugs, that’s a major red flag for authorities. But yet again, this wasn’t drugs. It was just poppy seeds from a bagel.
DRING LABOR, DRUG TEST TESTS POSITIVE FOR OPIATES, BUT IT WAS JUST A BAGEL
But the poor woman, Elizabeth Dominguez from Tonawanda, was now under automatic scrutiny by authorities. The hospital staff followed normal legal procedure and called Child Protective Services. So you can guess how this went. Not well. Dominguez had her baby. But she wasn’t able to take her baby home. She and her husband went home alone. So can you imagine the scene? You’ve had a baby and that’s one of the most magical small periods of time in the world. But authorities take your baby away from you and send you home alone while they investigate. That’s pretty much a nightmare. But it happened to poor Elizabeth.
POPPY SEED FALSE POSITIVES ARE NOTHING NEW, SO WHY DID THIS TRAVESTY HAPPEN?
But here’s the thing. This isn’t a new phenomenon. I’ve heard of NYPD having this issue. Firemen, too. Really, it’s not new. Everyone knows that if you eat poppy seeds, most commonly ingested on bagels, that they can cause a false positive on a drug test. Poppy seeds, you see, come from opium plants. So this isn’t shocking or unusual. But why don’t they tell pretty much everyone in the world not to eat them before you go to the hospital to, say, have your baby? It’s a little outrageous. But for the Dominguez family, what could and should have been a perfect welcome for their newborn Carter became anything but.

NEWBORN BABY IS NOW HOME WITH FAMILY, BUT THAT BONDING TIME IS LOST FOREVER
So yes, Carter didn’t test positive for opiates after his mom did. That should tell you that she wasn’t a drug dealer. But procedure means CPS gets called anyway. So a mother gets separated from her newborn baby when it’s most important they be together. Sure, they finished their investigation and cleared her and Carter is now home where he belongs. But this shouldn’t have happened at all.
