Police Pull Guns on Yankees GM Over Stolen Car Confusion

CONNECTICUT POLICE PULL OVER YANKEES GM, DRAW THEIR GUNS, BECAUSE MISTAKEN IDENTITY

So I don’t really know what to make of this situation.  I’m a lifelong Yankee fan.  But I’ve taken more than a dozen steps back from the day-to-day Yankees news.  So while I know who Brian Cashman is, the Yankees GM, I have no idea if he’s doing a good job or not.  And with the media in NYC, it’s a hard read.  But I’m a little flummoxed to head that Connecticut police pulled Cashman over and also pulled their guns on him.  That’s some dangerous shit right there.  And all over some stolen car confusion.

YANKEES GM’S CAR WAS ON STOLEN LIST, AND IT MATCHED THE DESCRIPTION OF AN ARMED CAR THIEF

So here’s the thing.  Someone had stolen Cashman’s Jeep weeks before.  But when police pulled him over he had only recently retrieved his Jeep from authorities.  But when Cashman got it back, he forgot to take it off the stolen vehicles list.  So when Connecticut police saw him driving his white Jeep, they saw it as a stolen vehicle.  But even worse, there was an APB out for an armed car thief driving the same make, model and color Jeep.

FORTUNATELY, YANKEES GM KEPT HIS HEAD AND FOLLOWED ALL COMMANDS UNTIL POLICE RECOGNIZED HIM

So how is that for some crazy luck?  But those confluences do at least explain why police pulled him over, drew their guns and had him exit his Jeep under threat of getting shot.  Yet I can’t help but wonder about how many ways this could have gone wrong.  What if Cashman was a black man?  I know, I know.  But I will give this to the Yankees GM; he offered no resistance and followed all their commands.  He’d be dead, otherwise.

Afterwards, Cashman told media he was “more than okay with whatever they needed me to do” to “make sure everyone, including themselves, are in a safe environment.”  Sure, ok.  But it totally didn’t hurt that one of the cops recognized Cashman and de-escalated the situation before sending him on his way.
