SOME IDIOT’S DRONE COLLIDED WITH A FIREFIGHTING PLANE, AND GROUNDED IT FOR 3 DAYS SO FAR
Inevitably, you’ve heard about the wildfire in California that has devastated the Palisades region. At a minimum, you’ve seen clickbait about certain celebrities who have lost their homes. But this fire is pretty much unprecedented, and is now at over 20,400 acres yet is only contained at 8% of the total. And there’s another fire north of Santa Monica, with numbers of 13,900 acres, 3% containment. And there are more…. So fighting these wildfires with all available tools it essential. But I just learned about how some idiot’s drone grounded a firefighting plane after a collision on Thursday.

GROUNDED PLANE WAS SCOOPING UP 1,600 GALLONS OF OCEAN WATER TO DUMP ON PALISADES FIRE
And yes, that is the plane pictured above. In aerial firefighting terms, this plane, the SuperScooper Quebec 1 -or model Canadair CL-415- is a total beast. On Thursday, the plane was literally on a mission to scoop up 1,600 gallons of ocean water (from the air!) when it suffered a collision with some idiot’s drone, damaging its wing and forcing it to land. And it’s remained grounded since. And that water it was scooping (you can see video here) was intended to get dumped on the Palisades fire. On Thursday. But this firefighting plane didn’t get to help fight the fire, and hasn’t been able to for the last 3 days and counting.

And yes, there are temporary flight restrictions in the area (duh!), that will remain in effect until January 23rd. Plus, it’s a federal crime to interfere with firefighting efforts on public lands. If they identify the idiot flying that drone, and I hope they do, they could get up to 12 months in prison and as much as a $75,000 civil fine. Because this idiot, by grounding a firefighting plane that can scoop up 1,600 gallons of ocean water from the air to dump on wildfires from above, just might cause the deaths of people and even more property destruction. As it is now, hundreds of thousands of people are under evacuation orders.
And these fires aren’t even close to contained.
