Photo Aging, What is it and How to Combat it

WHAT THE HELL IS PHOTO AGING AND WHAT CAN YOU DO TO COMBAT IT?

As we get older (or when we get older), there’s an ongoing, natural aging process. That aging process will be experienced by everyone.  No one gets a free pass!  But this “aging” is usually characterized by wrinkles on the skin, decreased physical capacity, memory loss, decreased function of sensory organs (such as sight, hearing and smell), as well as other physiological functions that include digestion and cardiovascular function.  But there’s another kind of aging.  We know it as photo aging.  It’s scary too!  So what can you do to combat this photo aging?

PHOTO AGING IS LOOKING OLDER, BEFORE YOU ARE ACTUALLY OLDER

Photo aging is “premature” aging.  So this is the result of reduced collagen and the elastin fibers of the skin.  But of course, nobody wants to experience this!  We can still be young.  But to our horror we already have these fine strokes of wrinkles on our face!  It actually makes us look older than we really are.  Who wants that?  No one!

#1 GOAL AT AGE 40 IS NOT TO LOOK AGE 40, OR 50, OR 60

What is most people’s goal after they turn 40 when it comes to their appearance?  Well, they want to look 10-20 years younger than they really are.  But for a variety of reasons, many women today are suffering from this premature, photo aging.  For some, this can have a big impact on their confidence and even the energy they think they have every day to do what they need to get done.  So if you have photo aging and don’t want to have these unnecessary, early old wrinkles on your face, here’s wheat you need to know.

WHAT CAUSES PREMATURE PHOTO AGING AND HOW TO COMBAT IT?

Sometimes, people experience this because of heredity (you inherit it from your parents) as well as hormonal factors.  For some of us, it’s our genetics that make us look older (or younger) than we really are.  If you look older than you think you should, you need to overcome it with diligent skin care.  So regular, nourishing facials, hydration, exfoliation and other skin care practices are key.  Be aware that different skin types have different needs!  But nutrition and vitamins are also important tools to help prevent or reduce the effects of photo aging.

LOW ESTROGEN CAN BE A CAUSE OF PHOTO AGING

If you are low in estrogen, this can be a cause of photo aging.  Low estrogen impacts can include increased skin growth and elasticity and can also cause increased cell lubricant secretion.  Estrogen also has an impact on blood circulation which is key to maintaining the skin’s normal structure.  Think supple, with maintained collagen count and healthy hydration.  All of these work together to make a woman’s body and face look feminine and young.  So if you need more estrogen in your system, you can add soybean foods to your diet.  Think tofu, tempeh and soy milk.  Dates and tea from fennel seeds are also other natural sources of Estrogen.

STRESS, YES STRESS, IS ALSO A CAUSE OF PREMATURE AGING

Stress is a major problem when it comes to premature aging.  Overthinking, lack of sleep, little downtime and relaxation, too much work, all of these can age you prematurely.  Stress hormones age you faster!  Increased levels of cortisol (stress hormone) in your skin increases your blood sugar levels.  That excess sugar can damage your skin’s collagen.  That means faster sagging, more wrinkles, and then more wrinkles.

But that increase blood sugar also interferes with your skin’s blood circulation.  That means your skin gets less oxygen and other nutrients that are needed to keep looking young.  Think: rough skin.  And dryer skin.

PROPER REST THE KEY TO OVERCOMING THE IMPACTS OF STRESS

So you have to have enough rest to recover from stress.  It’s your brain, your body and your skin that all need to recover together.  Focusing on positive fun and remembering to actually do things that you like are also important here.  Dark chocolate helps fight off the effects of cortisol, in moderation of course.  It’s rich in Flavonoids which is a great antioxidant.  It helps with stress as well as the impacts of pollution in your environment.

So keep all this in mind if you want to turn back the clock on premature aging.  take care of yourself, eat the right foods, sleep and take care of your skin!  The wrinkles WILL come soon enough!  So combat this while you can. It will only get harder…
