People in Korea Don’t Leave Fans on, Cause Death, Why

PEOPLE IN KOREA THINK FANS SUCK OUT ALL THE AIR IN A ROOM SO YOU CAN’T BREATHE

People in Korea don’t believe in leaving a fan on in a closed room.  Because they think it will suck all the air out of the room and kill you. It’s an old wives’ tale that says the result of such actions cause death, that continues to have traction today.  But why not leave fans on?  It’s a weird belief that won’t die.  Why?

GOVERNEMENT PROPAGATED THE CAUSE DEATH RUMOR DUE TO THE ENERGY CRISIS

Back in the 1970s the South Korean government propagated rumors that you can die if you you’re a fan on, but it was really to curb the energy crisis. Electric fans first appeared in the 1930s and citizens appreciated them but have since been extremely cautious of them. How could an electric breeze be the death of you?

The people in Korea believe that he cold air that circulates for too long, particularly in a closed area, will lead to organ failure and cause death. They also believe that fans can suck the air out, causing suffocation. The blades of the fan also are believed to convert oxygen molecules into carbon dioxide. All this to say that the manufacturers have taken caution, by equipping the fans with timers.  The South Korea’s Consumer Protection Board has even issued warnings about the dangers, which is also propagated by the media.

PROFESSOR PUTS THE FAN FEAR TO THE TEST

A fellow from Korea by the name of Chun Rim, also a professor at the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering, decided to put the worries about fans to a test. He even used his own eleven-year-old daughter as a test subject. He put her in a room with a fan and checked her vitals every five minutes. The conclusion was that she survived and the fans did not cause death.  His family now sleep with fans on, especially during heat waves.
