Peanut Allergy Patch May Be Accessible to the Public Soon

PEANUT ALLERGY PATCH WILL HELP MILLIONS WHO HAVE THIS DEVASTATING ALLERGY

A pharmaceutical company has developed a patch for people with the peanut allergy.  It may be accessible to the public sometime in 2018.  Approximately 6 billion people in the North America and Europe have peanut allergies.  This is possibly because of changes in the soil where the crops are grown.  A biotechnology company called DVB Technologies SA has developed a patch that was approved for FDA review.  If all goes well with the review, the patch will soon be available. But there were discouraging studies last year.

PEANUT ALLERGY SYMPTOMS ARE LIFE THREATENING TO PUBLIC

An allergy to peanuts is often life threatening.  Food-induced anaphylaxis usually causes this allergy.  But it requires immediate treatment.  If a person doesn’t receive treatment within minutes, they can die due to the related symptoms.  Symptoms according to the Mayo Clinic include:  constriction of airways, swelling of the throat that makes it difficult to breathe, a severe drop in blood pressure, rapid pulse, and dizziness or a loss of consciousness. A peanut allergy can occur either with direct contact, cross-contact or inhalation.

THE PATCH WILL WORK LIKE A VACCINE, ANOTHER SEEKING A CURE AND OFFERING HOPE

This patch works very much like a vaccine.  It exposes the wearer’s immune system to micro-doses of peanut protein to promote tolerance.  But what are the side effects for these patches?  On the positive side, it can certainly help ease any stress related to living in an unsafe world laced with peanuts. A competitor, Aimmune Therapy, is actually working on developing a cure for peanut allergies.  Perhaps the cure is to stop spraying the peanut fields with pesticides or using GMO products.  But that would make things much too simple.  The FDA approved a fast-track designation, which means the review process will be much faster.
