Search and Rescue teams found and recovered a body in Oregon a couple weeks ago and the situation is unique, so far.  Well, unique in Oregon.  Experts believe that the person was a hiker attacked and killed by a cougar.  The Oregon hiker was Diana Bober who was 55 years old.  They found her body just off a trail roughly 40 miles southeast of Portland.  This was in the Mount Hood National Forest in Welches, Oregon.  Searchers found her car near a ranger station and based their search on that location.  Her family had reported her missing which started the search.

55-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WAS AVID HIKER, WENT MISSING

Bober had been serious hiker who often frequented the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood area.  But her family and friends grew concerned when no one had heard from her for some time.  No one knows when she started her hike, though time of death will give experts some idea at least when she was killed, according to Sgt. Brian Jensen from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.  Bober’s remains showed signs of what could only have been a cougar attack.  The medical examiner said that she had not dies and then later been mauled.  They took DNA samples from her remains to confirm the culprit’s identity.

LOCAL SCHOOLS ON NOTICE, HIKERS WARNED AS AUTHORITIES HUNT MAN KILLER COUGAR

Authorities have made the local school district aware of the danger and also told hikers to avoid the area.  Wildlife officials are currently trying to find and kill the cougar that has humans on the menu.  Brian Wolfer, the watershed manager for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, said, “This is an unprecedented event in Oregon.  We don’t know what risk it poses to the public.”  But while this is the first case of a cougar killing anyone in Oregon, it is the second fatal attack in the Pacific Northwest this year.  A cougar killed a mountain biker in Washington State last May.  That had been the first fatal attack in Washington in 94 years. So what has changed?

So beware cougars, not just at the bar.
