POD OF KILLER WHALES, AKA ORCAS, ARE WEIRDLY ATTACKING AND RAMMING BOATS NEAR SPAIN
So this is like it’s out of some movie, straight-to-video on late-night television no-one is watching. Well, actually there was a movie, Orca. Over 40 years ago…. A character played by Richard Harris killed a Killer Whale and its unborn calf. Then, the still living daddy orca wanted revenge. It wasn’t pretty. Killer whales are seriously big and powerful creatures. But normally they don’t attack people. Well, outside a Sea World, that is. But for some reason, an entire pod of Orcas is attacking and ramming boats off the coast of Northern Spain. Really.
ORCAS TARGETED A 36-FOOT SAILBOAT, RAMMED IT OVER 15 TIMES AND STRANDED IT
So I’ve been in a little bitty boat near dolphins and sharks. None of them were huge. But they seemed plenty big just a few feet away, looking back at me. But Orcas? They are LARGE. And when they decide to make contact with a boat, the boat feels it. So does everyone on board. And if you are on one of these boats, it’s a real cause for concern. Just a couple weeks ago, a 36-foot sailboat found itself the subject of this Orca pod’s attentions. They rammed it over 15 times and destroyed its rudder, leaving it helpless and needing a tow back to shore.
EXPERTS SAY THERE’S NOTHING TO FEAR, BUT STILL, MAYBE STAY AWAY FROM THESE ORCAS
The Orca pod has gone after several other vessels as well, damaging them. Local authorities have put the word out, warning anyone who sees a pod of killer whales to keep a serious distance from them. But experts say there’s no cause for serious alarm. And, well, that’s good. They say these may simply be younger whales that are curious and having a little bit of fun. But after feeling helpless to much smaller animals, I’d have to say I’d be afraid of ending up like Richard Harris in the movie, Orca. Stay tuned and add an Orca hashtag. There’s bound to be more!
