On the Latest Episode,You Stupid Celebrity Quotes... Julianne Hough

It’s yet another case of celebrity f*ckery, the kind of f*ckery that can only be attributed to someone whose job is to work out and look pretty and occasionally speak some words into a camera. In other words, people who can’t be bothered with knowing about the world, common sense, other humans, etc. any longer. The celebrity in question is Julianne Hough and the f*ckery committed: blackface. It’s terrifying how frequently incidents of blackface appear in the media, involving full-grown Caucasian adults, and sometimes not even for Halloween. Can we just gather everyone around for a second and repeat once and, hopefully, for all: IT IS NEVER OK. STOP IT.

I get that Hough’s costume was a tribute to one of her favorite characters, Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, from one of her favorite shows, “Orange Is the New Black” (I totally agree that it’s a great show and that Crazy Eyes is a marvelous, fresh, incomparable character), but it could not have been more misguided if she had decided to zombify it for extra effect. It just goes to show how out of touch celebrities can be, and not just them, but their inner circles too, who often times should be held even more accountable (I don’t expect many celebrities to have a handle on things outside of being a celebrity). Did she ask for anyone’s opinion? Did her publicity team vet the costume? If several people knew about the idea beforehand, and let her go forward with it anyway, then I just want to give up on the human race.

The actress attended the Casamigos Tequila Halloween party in Hollywood with a group of friends, who all partook in the theme by dressing up as other characters from the Netflix show. The others, however, are more likely to have read a page or two of a history book, as they avoided drawing inspiration from Jim Crow for their costumes.

Hough has since apologized for the mishap, tweeting that she didn’t mean to be “disrespectful or demeaning”:

Hough’s brother, Derek Hough, has also addressed the incident, saying, “She is just beyond beside herself. She’s so apologetic. She’s so so sorry.”

I completely believe her when she says she’s sorry and that she didn’t mean to be offensive, but in case she ever forgets again — and to anyone else out there still unclear on this matter — here is a friendly flowchart that could save you time and trouble in the future.
