SOME OLIGARCH WANTS TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL, AND LIVE DEEP UNDER THE OCEAN IN PERMANENT HOUSING
There has been quite a bit of conversation in recent years about the ultra-rich and the patterns of where they live, how they live and why they make those choices. I remember the good old days when New Zealand was the supposed place du jour and, admittedly, I had identified it as the place to be as a teenager in the early 90’s. Hey, the people are nice, it’s geographically isolated, and relatively politically stable, especially regionally. Why wouldn’t rich people want that as an always backup plan? But things have changed a bit in recent years, and the ultra-rich might want even more isolation. So I’m not completely surprised to learn of an oligarch pouring funds to speed up permanent housing under the ocean.

HOUSING UNDER THE OCEAN IS A CHALLENGE, BUT THIS ANONYMOUS OLIGARCH IS PUNTING HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS
Sure, more than a couple infamous billionaires have made their focus on space, space exploration, various La Grange orbital facilities and Mars, of course. But if you want to maintain your exclusive, luxurious lifestyle without needing escape velocity, what better place than under the ocean with a ready food supply? Sure, it’s a little bit like Bioshock, but besides leaks what could go wrong? So all it takes to speed up a nearly languishing slow project is one oligarch and a few hundred million ready to jump things into the fast lane. And the project, of course is called “Deep.”

THE PROJECT IS “DEEP,” NOT “THE DEEP,” AND THE WHOLE AFFAIR SEEMS SOMEHOW SHALLOW
Not “the Deep,” and the people working on it are averse to that, for some reason. I’m not sure if they didn’t like the movie The Deep, with Nick Nolte, Jacqueline Bisset, Eli Wallach and Robert Shaw. And, of course, the deep in the Bible can also refer to chaos, danger and evil. But the project Deep is now converting a flooded quarry near Wales as a test pool for their luxury pressure resistant dome, set to house its rich inhabitants up to 200 meters under water. A chef has already been retained, and that culinary pro better be a wizard, because even an oligarch’s taste buds will have trouble tasting under high pressure.
