Oldest Beer, Brewery Ever Found In Israel

ISRAEL THE HOME OF THE OLDEST BEER AND BREWERY IN THE WORLD, SO FAR

Researchers say they have found the world’s oldest brewery, along with beer residues and  artifacts thought to be its manufacturing tools. Experts believe them to be around 13,000 years old.  The amazing find was in prehistoric caves near the Israeli city of Haifa.  For context, the first brewery ever recorded in human history was more than 5,000 years ago. But the latest discovery in Israel may force a total reevaluation of the history surrounding the processing of beer itself.  That’s because this may be the oldest beer in the world.

BEER WASN’T ALWAYS WHEAT OR YEAST BASED, WAS ALSO MEMORIAL PARTY BEVERAGE

The latest finding also show that beer was not always a by-product of bread making (using the remaining raw materials for processing bread, such as yeast, wheat, etc.) as previously thought.  But one thing they still believe strongly is that processed beer was used at ritual parties to honor the dead, according to what the researchers said in the Journal of Archaeological Science.  Ancient beer was a memorial beverage!  Now it’s for all occasions, for almost all people.

RESEARCHERS MANAGED TO RECREATE ANCIENT BEER FOR THEIR RESEARCH, YAY!

They found the traces of the ancient beer in 60 cm deep mortar stones on the cave floor. The stone was used to store, pound and cook various types of plants, including oats, nuts and bark, such as flax.  The ancient drink, which was mush-like when found, wasn’t much like the beer we know today.  But the research team managed to recreate the ancient drink so that they could compare it to the residues they found on site.

ANCIENT BEER WAS WEAKER, VERY DIFFERENT

Making it requires wheat grains to produce the malt.  Next is heating the malt while fermenting it with wild yeast, the study said. While the ancient beer is fermented, the alcohol content is much less that contemporary beers.  So if you were to have attended one of these memorial parties, you would have needed to drink a lot to get to where you were going, so to speak.
