Another School Shooting, Nothing Changes

School shooting is not new under Obama

School shooting has continued. Obama has been in the White House for eight years.

Aa 13-year-old boy shot and killed two people and critically injured two others. It is presumed that the boy got the gun from a family member and used the weapon — legally obtained and not locked up — to end the lives of two other people just so that the boy could have some sort of effectual closure on whatever issues were going through his 13-year old boy mind.Mass shootings have tripled in America in 2013, according to Attorney General Eric Holder while speaking at the International Association Of Chiefs Of Police. Politico writes:

Between 2000 and 2008, the U.S. experienced an average of five mass shootings every year. Since then the annual average has tripled, Holder said. So far in 2013, there have been at least 12, he said.

According to Justice Department figures on mass shootings, 404 people were shot and 207 people were killed from 2009 to 2012. From 2000 to 2008, 324 people were shot and 145 were killed.

And more and more, Americans seem to care very little about any actual gun control, even as the number of violent deaths by the hands of armed gunmen (and gunboys, it turns out) increases. The NRA spends somewhere between $800,000 and $2,000,000 per financial quarter on Congressional lobbying alone, and that’s just the money that’s on the books. In 2010 the NRA spent $7,200,000 on independent lobbying during the midterm elections; the product of which got us the stymied partisanally gridlocked congress that we have right now in political office.

This is, of course, in addition to the $250million a year that the Koch Brothers spend on political racketeering each year, keeping the Tea Party funded and being able to shut down the entire government due to their suicide caucus. School shooting continues.

So not only are political actions killing America metaphorically but they’re also having a direct effect on killing Americans by their own hand. Guns kill some 40,000 civilians a year (though it should be noted that at least a quarter of those are by suicide), yet America is now in the precarious position of having one gun for every person. In 2015, gun deaths are expected to eclipse those that die in automobile accidents.

But nobody is gonna do anything about it. Nobody is gonna vote for effective gun control. Nobody is gonna vote for smarter guns. In fact, the NRA has successfully lobbied against the manufacturing of smart guns – ones that can be fired only by their owner. This might prevent the scores of senseless deaths by the hands of madmen and madwomen firing indiscriminately into middle schools, navy yards, and post offices.

But nobody is gonna do anything, because the NRA doesn’t give a fuck about you – merely about the millions of dollars it can make from the near constant and ever-increasing sales of guns and ammunition.

School shooting can be stopped? Maybe the next time someone shoots up a middle school someone will actually listen. Maybe someone will actually do something about it. I remember thinking that shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Nothing changed.
