Nursing homes make money. How much money they make, like so much else, depends on how little money they spend. But we keep hearing of tragedies in nursing homes. Many of them seem to be preventable tragedies. That seems to be the case again in Lafayette, Georgia. 93-year-old Rebecca Zeni died in a nursing home facility there back in 2015. But how did she die? Painfully over the course of months or even years. That’s some dedicated neglect. Zeni’s autopsy report says she died of “septicemia due to crusted scabies.” A forensic pathologist reviewed Zeni’s case and said that millions of the mites ate Zeni alive, taking months or even years. It’s a nursing home horror story.

But how could this happen? Zeni was part of the American dream. Back in World War II she worked in a naval yard. She went on to be a model in New York City and eventually worked in Chicago TV at a station. But beware retirement. It will kill us all. But it will kill us faster at some retirement facilities than at others. Zeni had been in the Shepherd Hills Nursing home since 2010 and had suffered from dementia. But the Georgia Department of health was notified of scabies outbreaks in 2013 and again in 2015. But the state never inspected the facility. A state employee emailed the facility a manual on how to treat scabies, but Zeni died eleven days later.

But the Georgia Department of Health spokesperson Nancy Nydam said that the agency doesn’t consider these outbreaks to be uncommon, especially at nursing homes. But the 2015 outbreak exposed 35 staff and home residents. That seems like a major problem. But pictures of Zeni shortly before her death show her skin flaking off and one of her hands completely blackened. Doesn’t’ that seem to merit a doctor call? It never happened. Attorneys for Zeni’s family says staff were told not to touch Zeni’s hand for fear “it might fall off her body.” That means they knew something was badly wrong and did nothing to help her. And Zeni died a horrible death, with millions of the parasites living in her body, eating her alive.
