New Zealand Airport Posts Signs Limiting Hugs to 3 Minutes Max

DUNEDIN AIRPORT IN NEW ZEALAND HAS NEW SIGNS IN DROP-OFF: 3 MINUTE HUGS MAX

Well, this is a new thing that I never considered as something that could affect the rules of behavior for the rest of my life.  Fortunately, so far it’s only at the inaugural location beginning this new possible trend, in New Zealand.  Evidently, the Dunedin Airport in the city of Dunedin is a little bit too busy for people to stand around hugging for too long.  So to keep things and people moving, the airport has posted signs about the new rule at drop-off sites: hugs can be for a grand maximum of 3 minutes.

HUGS IS LIKELY A METAPHOR, AS PEOPLE NEED TO KEEP ON MOVING AT BUSY AIRPORTS

But I’m guessing that people don’t hug for longer than 3 minutes.  It’s probably that they hug multiple times and loiter, delaying saying goodbye for as long as possible.  And I can sort of get that, having dealt with drop-off zones both as a traveler and dropper at a number of airports.  And in just the big airports of the northeast, the drop-off zones can get pretty hairy with people not moving fast enough, or possibly even hugging too long.  So in that vein I will have to partly assume that these new rules limiting hugs to a 3 minute max are somewhat metaphorical.

MAKING THE TIME MAX ABOUT HUGS IS MORE FUN THAN A FINE, OR GETTING YOUR CAR CLAMPED

But some folks don’t see the logic, or the possibly implied metaphor either.  And those folks have created a little tad bit of controversy, forcing Dan De Bono, the Dunedin Airport Chief, to explain in rather simpler terms.  He said, “We’re trying to have fun with it. It is an airport and those drop off locations are common locations for farewells,” also including that other messages at airport drop-off zones can get to be “quite intense.”  To be fair, some airports have signs threatening to put clamps on cars too slow to move, or even fines.

So do what the sign says, and use the car park if you need more than 3 minutes to make your hugs, have your farewells, and then be on your way.  And then don’t be surprised to see similar signs at your own, local airport soon.
