New Year Resolution, Make Yourself Happier

HOW GOOD IS YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTION?

A resolution according to the dictionary means “a firm decision to do or not to do something”.  A New Year’s resolution is a tradition where a person resolves to change a something about themselves.  It could also be achieving a personal goal.  But why do people make New Year’s resolutions?  And what is a good New Year resolution? How can you go about deciding on making one that you’ll actually keep?   First, be realistic.  It can’t be something you’ll give up on after a week or so.  Second, it’s got to be in you to do.  No one else will do it!  Third, think about what will make you happier.

BRAINSTORM IDEAS WITH YOURSELF, BE HAPPIER

One thing you can try is to make your New Year resolution process more of a ritual.  Buy yourself craft paper and stickers or get a new journal.  Begin writing for a few minutes, about anything really.  Just get the juices rolling.  And then ask yourself, “what do I really want?”  Maybe it’s to feel better.  Or be more social.  That may be your umbrella idea.  Then look at all the small ideas beneath that.  If it’s to feel better, what can actually make you feel better?  Do the research.  Identify what you want.  Maybe it’s laughing more.  And if that’s the case, it’s not hard to laugh more.  Get to it, get amused.  Youtube makes it easy.

KEEP IT SMALL BUT BE THE CHANGE IN YOURSELF

Keep it small and keep it about feeling good.  That way you will keep wanting more.  If feeling good, or better, is your goal. Maybe you decide to join a gym to work out hard core, and you stop going on the January 3rd.  You may plummet, eat more, go to gym less and by January 31st. Then you’ll be forced to join Weight Watchers because you suck.  Maybe skip that generic misery and simply be the change in yourself.  What will make you happier?

IF YOU NEED IT, ASK FOR SUPPORT

So, only change one behavior at a time!  And then talk about it.  Share your experience with someone so that you are actually holding yourself accountable.  Talking to yourself just makes you look crazy.  So talk to someone else!  They can ask you questions along the way, and you can actually troubleshoot if you feel you are falling off the wagon.  And by wagon, we mean the wagon of New Year resolutions! But don’t beat yourself up when you fall off that wagon of ‘be the change in yourself’.  Ask for support when you need it.  And do the best you can with your New Year’s resolutions.
