MOVING WHILE BLACK RUNS INTO NEIGHBORHOOD RACIST WATCH
There goes the neighborhood! The neighborhood being the Upper West Side in New York City. Darren Martin is a black man. He’s a former White House staffer. But he may have made a mistake. He thought it would be a good idea to move into the Upper West Side. But he may have made a mistake. Evidently, it’s not safe to be a black man there either! Martin was moving his things into his new apartment in a 5-story walk up when things went sideways.
One of his new neighbors thought he was suspicious and called the police. Let’s call it the Neighborhood Racist Watch. They said he was a burglar and was breaking in! So of course the NYPD responded at the scene, the scene being Martin’s new building and apartment. So much for Phillie in the news! Forget Moving On Up, it ain’t safe to Move In!
MOVING WHILE BLACK MEANS YOU’RE AN ARMED BLACK MAN BREAKING IN
The neighbor called the police and reported a “burglary in progress.” That’s bad enough. But the police dispatch’s description could have made the response deadly. It said, “Somebody was trying to break in the door with a possible weapon…a large tool.” That means police think there’s an armed black man, burglarizing a residence. What could go wrong?
Well, at least this time no one got killed or wounded. Martin posted the experience on Instagram with, “I’m in my apartment but you know – you can’t go nowhere without the cops following me. Somebody called the cops on me in my own building. About how many are ya’ll? About six of ya’ll showed up, rolled up on me.”

WHEW! SIX POLICE RESPOND TO CALL, BUT DON’T STORM IN WITH GUNS OUT
Six police responded, because an armed black man is so threatening. Except he wasn’t armed. He was just moving in! Fortunately, the police didn’t come in with guns out, expecting to be shot themselves. Martin had some more to say about the experience. “As a black man when you’re in an all-white environment, you’re cognizant of that. I have to say I found it kinda symbolic. [It’s] like welcome to the neighborhood.” He recently signed a one year lease and will live there this coming year.
