Your Mouthwash Negates Your Gains From Exercise

MOUTHWASH TOTALLY NEGATES POST EXERCISE LOW BLOOD PRESSURE BENEFITS

So how’s this for some totally unwelcome news?  We all exercise.  Or at least we should, or do more than we say we have time for.  But exercise is good for you.  You live longer.  You lower your stress.  It even has a quick impact lowering your blood pressure!  Exercise is the bomb, and the balm in our lives when we do it.  But new research shows that when you use mouthwash, that oral cleaner negates some of the best benefits from exercise.  Depressing, right?  I, for one, want that six pack for later, and a fresh mouth that helps get you to later.  Know what I mean?

MOUTHWASH IMPACTS OUR BIOME IN THE VERY BEGINNING, IN OUR MOUTHS

So what’s going on?  Well, the bacteria in your mouth.  They are hell on important to our overall health.  But especially how our entire biome functions.  We have this byproduct of nitric oxide (nitrate) in our mouths.  But some of our natural bacteria simply eat that up and make them go away.  They transform nitrate into nitrite, which then goes into our bodies when we swallow.  And our bodies then…. Turn that back into nitrate.  That nitrate then helps lower our blood pressure after we work out.  So as you might imagine, when we ingest nitrate, our bodies transform it into something less helpful.

GOOD MOUTH BACTERIA GET WIPED OUT BY MOUTHWASH ALONG WITH THAT TUNA SANDWICH

So researchers did a case study with a group of people in order to see what happens in a control group when they use mouthwash regularly.  But that’s where the bad news is confirmed.  People who use mouthwash (and some toothpastes also do this as well) had higher blood pressure, even with exercise, than those who did not.  In other words, that amazing side effect of post-exercise hypotension disappears when you rinse and sanitize the very bacteria you need to feel and actually be healthier.

So I’m not saying you shouldn’t use mouthwash.  But if you’re at all obsessive or have delusions of being Adonis or Venus, you may want to tone it down just a little.  Try some mint.  It is wafer thin.
