MOTHER HANDCUFFED AFTER SON DETAINED FOR WAVING AT HS GRADUATION
Ok, here’s another story where things don’t really line up well for the minorities involved. It’s one more really outrageous graduation story. This time it was a high school in San Antonio. Anna Martinez was there to see her son Luis graduate. It’s supposed to be a happy and proud celebration. But the school had some strict rules about decorum for the students on the stage. Yet again, though, the rules didn’t seem to apply to all the students. Anna was handcuffed and detained by San Antonio ISD police when she confronted staff at the stage to find out what was going on when her son Luis didn’t return to his seat with his HS diploma. What did Luis do? He waved at his family from the stage. Yup, you read that right. But then this poor kid had his mother handcuffed, too!
WAS IT JUST THE LATIN KID WHO OFFICIALS DETAINED FOR WAVING? AND JUST HIS MOTHER HANDCUFFED, TOO?
Was there a rule against waving? Yes, there was. But media got ahold of a video of the event clearly showing almost every student doing the same thing, waving at their friends and family as they crossed the stage. This includes the valedictorian as well. But staff detained Luis for his waving and held him back stage. Anna didn’t know what happened and was confused when Luis didn’t return to his seat. But she found out when he called her from his cell phone. Anna Martinez remembered, “He says, ‘Mom, they’re not going to give me my diploma,’ and I said, ‘What?'”
MOTHER WANTED ANSWERS WHEN HER SON DIDN’T RETURN WITH HIS DIPLOMA
So Anna went looking for answers from whoever was in charge. That’s when things got even worse. Police claim that Anna was trying to access the stage and wouldn’t stop. So they handcuffed her and physically restrained her. Anna says she wasn’t ever trying to get on stage, just get some answers from someone. But it was a traumatizing experience. Anna described, “He yanked my arm, he yanked it so hard, he yanked it twice and my arm went up and I kept on begging him, ‘Please, you’re hurting me.'”
SOMETHING DOESN’T ADD UP HERE AS FAMILY VICTIMIZED FOR NO REASON
Anna was and is furious about what transpired. “These children waved, they spent their four years working so hard. I saw my son studying, coming and going, then when he became a father, working part time, going to school. Doing all of that and he waved and because he waved he was told, ‘No, you can’t finish what you started. It ends here, because you waved.'” She wants this story out for the public so that school leaders can learn when it’s OK to bend the rules. So far, we don’t know how many other students officials detained. But we know the video show clearly a ton waved and weren’t. So why was Luis?
At least we also know he got his HS diploma afterwards. But not the way he earned the right to receive and celebrate it.
