MOTHER ABANDONS HER 4 KIDS FOR GERMAN VACATION, LEAVES THEM WITH A GLOCK
Iowa has got some kooky people. I’ve never been to Iowa. All I really know about Iowa is that’s where Captain James T Kirk is supposed to be born in a couple hundred years. But now there’s news about a Iowa mother, her four kids, a Glock and a vacation to Germany. The woman is 31-year-old Erin Lee Macke. Erin had a trip planned to travel to Germany last September. But she couldn’t get any baby sitters to look after her kids. So what did she do? She left for Germany anyway on September 20th. But don’t worry. She left them with a 9MM Glock handgun for protection. It wasn’t loaded, but it was sitting next to two magazines. But seriously, who abandons their kids and leaves them with a gun for a German vacation?

One of her kids called their father, divorced from their mother, letting him know their mom had left the country and that they were alone. The father called the police. So the Police in Johnston, Iowa went by the house to do a welfare check on the 21st. The kids were alone for a full day. The police confirmed the kids were alone and discovered the handgun as well. The police immediately called Erin in Germany and told her to come home as soon as possible. But Erin wasn’t in any hurry. While she did shorten her vacation trip by a few days, she didn’t come home for six days after the police called her. The day after she returned, police arrested her.

But it’s a sordid affair, to say the least. Erin’s lawyer has accused her ex-husband, Matt, of creating a major drama over the vacation. So far, both Erin and her lawyer don’t seem to understand how serious the situation is. Erin hasn’t acknowledged that she did anything wrong. Her ex-husband said, “Erin refuses to admit that her choices put the children at a substantial risk of harm.” She left her children alone with a handgun! While Erin hasn’t pled guilty, she’s entered an Alford plea. It’s like sorta guilty. Had her case gone to trial, Erin could have gone to prison for eight years. Instead, a judge sentenced her to two years of probation.

Matt has received custody of the two youngest kids as he is their biological father. The court has not yet decided on what will happen to the older 12-year-old twins. For now, Erin is barred from having any contact with her kids. But the judge has suggested she receive counseling, which might allow her some contact with her kids. Hopefully, she starts to understand the stakes here. But really, who abandons their kids, leaves the country for a German vacation and then has no clue?
