MERMAIDING HOBBY AT RISK DUE TO WARNINGS AGAINST SWIMMING WITH THE FISH
Mermaiding has become popular in Brazil. Mirella Ferraz, 34, coined the term in her county and is the first and foremost professional mermaid. The small but growing community of mermaids and mermen are very concerned and angry over recent warnings against mermaiding. This has upset the merpeople of Brazil.
DON’T GET THE MERPEOPLE FUMING, THEY MAY SWIM YOU OR BUMP YOU WITH THEIR TAILS
Mermaiding became very popular because of a favorite tv show in Brazil. This hobby is called “sereismo” by locals in Brazil. Men and women have been purchasing and slipping into dazzlingly colored tails and swimming in the water. No one in the outside world has noticed and no one seems to really care. Well, except the merpeople. They happen to care a lot. Unfortunately for them, some safety agencies don’t like the idea of people swimming dressed as a mermaid because they deem it unsafe. The clothing or material could get heavy or snag and there is a risk in drowning. So, they are warning against swimming in mermaid attire.

PROFESSIONAL MERMAID UNHAPPY WITH “FALSEHOODS” AND FEELS DISCRIMINATED AGAINST
Ferraz, who happens to be a professional mermaid, is very upset about this situation. Her childhood dream turned reality for mermaiding could be crushed by the controversy. And she wants to keep pursuing wearing a tail. She has launched back at a recent campaign, calling for discrimination against mermaids. Ferraz claims they are spreading untruths and demonizing the merpeople by warning against swimming with a mermaid suit on the body. She further explains that the tails that merpeople wear are actually buoyant. That the falsehoods these agencies are spreading are only going to bring down the merpeople and that is not right.
CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC IN BRAZIL
This has become quite controversial in Brazil and has attracted a lot of interested people. If you can’t keep the mermaids happy, then we have no hope. So if you thought you knew all there was to see in Brazil, you were wrong! But perhaps the situation will improve. I bet that if they figure out a way to attract tourists with merpeople events, everyone will find a solution faster than you can cook a lobster tail.
