The virtual world keeps getting more…. I’m not going to say real, but I think a safe word is… involved. The virtual world keeps getting more involved….. either with the real or instead of the real. There’s more social media, more kinds of social media, more ways to use AI every damn day, and so much else. But speaking of AI, one of the “more ways” people are using it is to create that special someone to have in their lives. And yes, I’m talking about an artificial intelligence romance (or whatever). I really don’t understand the idea at all. And as a man, having an AI girlfriend has absolutely no appeal. But why do some men?

A recent essay for the American Philosophical Association’s blog dove in deep with a strong take. It was written by Northwestern PhD candidate Isaac Shur, and he didn’t pull any punches. Shur’s take, in brief, is that some men want an AI girlfriend so they have “fine-grained control over a sycophant.” In other words, they want a woman who always agrees, never fights back and, possibly most importantly, never requires consent. To me, it sounds a whole hell of a lot like an Incel’s dream come true. Well, maybe with a fair amount of lubricant and privacy.

I kind of get it, that heading in this direction was going to happen at some point. But the fact that it’s already here, and we’re already talking about why some men like the idea of an objectified woman manifest, is actually kind of scary. Yet on the other hand, ahem, I’m pretty grateful that when I was 13 years old, I didn’t have the option of creating a sex object, AI girlfriend that would do whatever I could think of.
