Medical Tourists Return from Mexico With Scary Superbug

DOZEN AMERICAN MEDICAL TOURISTS COME HOME INFECTED WITH MEXICAN SUPERBUG

I’m really not sure what to make of medical tourism, nor of medical tourists. The first time I really heard about the idea was years ago. It was in context to people looking to make a gender transition, usually in southeast Asia. But today, medical tourists go all over the world for everything you could think of. Dentistry, cardiology, weight loss, just about any medical service or procedure you could think of. People are traveling to other countries to get them done. Sometimes it’s a matter of quality, other times price. Often it’s both. But for a dozen American medical tourists, in recent months they came home from Mexico with a super scary superbug. Superbugs are bad, bad news.

So how did this happen? And where? Americans caught this superbug after having surgery in Tijuana, Mexico. Some of them recovered with no problem. But others are still seriously ill months later, regardless of treatment. For Tamika Capone, that is certainly true. The 40-year-old woman’s infection hasn’t gone away. But if it reaches her bloodstream, it could kill her. Even her doctors are surprised. Ryan Dare specializes in infectious-disease at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine in Little Rock. He said something scary. It was, “I’ve not yet had a patient with zero options, but this is as close as I’ve had.” Now that’s really scary, right?

TIJUANA OUTBREAK STILL NOT RESOLVED, CDC ISSUES WARNING

So the situation is NOT yet under control. The superbug infected 8 of these American medical tourists at Tijuana’s Grand View Hospital. One person has died so far. So the CDC announced a warning telling all travelers to avoid surgery of any kind at the hospital. That is, until it is certain the outbreak has been contained and eradicated. So far, no Mexican authorities have responded about the situation. Hospital officials won’t comment. Nor will the medical tourism agency Weight Loss Agents. Weight Loss Agents arranges procedures there and at other locations for medical tourists. One woman answered the phone and would not identify herself. She said that the superbug reports were just “a competitor’s smear campaign.”

BUT IS IT REALLY SAFER AT HOME? DO YOUR HOMEWORK FOR EVERY MARKET

Get that? A smear campaign. No comment about how that’s a true statement. No explanation about why those Americans got sick in Mexico. Just some tabloid level bullshit. So if you thought staying at home was complicated, think twice. Do your due diligence. Otherwise you could come home with a death sentence. It’s just a marketplace, and we’re all rubes. No, really. If we had safe and affordable care here at home, there would be no story. We would trust local doctors. We would trust the pricing. But nah, that’s back in the 1950’s, right?
