I hate wearing masks, and the pandemic only made my feelings about them stronger. But I wore masks in public for quite a while, like most people did who didn’t fall prey to the worst sort of propaganda. I’m sure you remember it. Covid is fake. Masks give you Covid. They’re causing emotional damage to children, more than the pandemic itself. But I figured, whatever the truth was and remains, you might as well wear the damn mask. If nothing else, it would prevent the spread of germs either to me or from me. Especially during flu season! But because of ugly politics, wearing masks in Long Island could get you a year in jail.

And no, there’s no punchline to make this legal joke funny in any way at all. It seems the Commissioners in Nassau County, which is in New York’s Long Island, voted to ban masks in public. And they’re serious about it, which explains the penalties that include a $1,000 fine or a year in jail. And they even have a name for the law, which is the “Mask Transparency Act.” And their ridiculous rationale for this? I’ll go to quotes from County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who explained the law was an effort to stop people from hiding their identity in public. But mostly during protests. He said, “people should not be allowed to cover their face.”

Now let’s try to remember: who is it that doesn’t like protestors? REPUBLICANS. And yes, this Commission is touting the party line on this one, because they don’t want protestors (which really means DEMOCRATS who are more likely to wear a mask in a crowd) to wear masks. Because for a lot of these people, or their presumed batshit crazy constituents anyway, Covid was and still is fake. So what else is happening politically this year that might explain what should be now dated political football grounding? Oh, yes, it’s the national election this year. And let’s face it folks. People who think Covid was fake and hate masks also tend to believe that the election was stolen from Trump in 2020.

Ah, well. Elected officials now deem themselves worthy of when you need to wear a mask to protect your health. Again.
